I know PC2-6400 = 400FSB. I want to overclock my friends i7-920 to 3GHz - 3.2Ghz that I am going to build him. Would PC3-12800 suffice? All the math with RAM confuses me, I'm not even sure what's the max FSB for my PC-8500 is.

Yes. If you use the 2:8 RAM divider, you can run the ram @ 800mhz (which means ram is running at 1600mhz, 200 bclk * 4, since 2:8 is essentially 1:4, 800mhz x 2 = ram speed of 1600mhz). Stock, the RAM will run 12 divider.

If you plan on overclocking to a higher bclk, make sure to either get good ram that will overclock, or maybe go for some 1866mhz ram.
