I've been reading a lot of threads today regarding best video card bang for the buck. It seems a lot of you really like the 6950's and from what I understand if you're lucky enough they can be flashed to unlock shaders and resemble 6970's?

I don't have any one game in particular that I like to play - but I'm desperately in need to refresh my rig (which is nearly 6 years old - gasp). So anything will be a big improvement but one question I had that I couldn't seem to find here or in many reviews was...

How do the ATI cards fair in video encoding vs the Cuda tech of Nvidia?

I do a lot of video encoding using TMPGenc (which does support Cuda). Currently I just have a single monitor but want to upgrade to a dual display (not enough desk real estate for anything larger).

By all means post links to any additional information you may have.

Did some more research - regardless of performance for video encoding it can't be that much different to justify the extra expense going with a geforce card at the time of writing this

there simply isnt any better bang for the buck it seems than using 6950's
 
A new review, IQ & benchmarking would be a good idea!

Last I used my 9600GT & 5870 cards for encoding, the image quality just didn't seem good enough. Maybe I'll try again.

My i7 HT has been chugging along ever since with all 8 threads loaded it's been my compromise so far.
 
I have looked into various GPU based encoders and from an image quality perspective they have all been terrible in comparison to x264 encodes. That is the reason I built a machine strictly for that purpose with an i7-980x. I am not suggesting everyone run out and buy a 6-core processor, but if you are interested in doing high quality video encoding then the best processor you can afford is the way to go.
 
QuickSync all the way... not to Hijack but I get much better performance using the CPU than any GPU can deliver.
 
nvidia's GPU video encoding is pretty much garbage quality. AMD's GPU encoding quality is nearly on par with software CPU encoding, as is Quick Sync accelerated encoding.

I believe AT did a video encoding quality test at SB launch a couple of months ago. nvidia just needs to bite the bullet and accept not even close second place GPU encoding speed while outputting decent quality.

For many people here who use discrete cards and don't want to be limited to the H6x chipsets, the Z68 launch is really when Quick Sync becomes relevant. It's still awesome and all that.

No hijack apologies necessary - this is exactly the information I'm looking for. Thanks for your honest opinions. I read up slightly on quick sync and thought "That won't catch on" lol apparently I was wrong.

The only downside is using different software unless Pegasys includes support for this - which I bet they will if they haven't already (never checked latest version).

For the difference in price between a i7-980x and a 920 you could get a Matrox CompressHD card. I dont know how good it is but it claims to do up to HD.
 
Ok, so I'm not the only one who didn't like GPU image quality...

though I'm surprised ATI scored as high as it did in that review. Too bad it hardly uses the GPU when encoding, my 5870 runs at less than half speed if I remember correctly, makes my i7-920 more or less the same speed if not a tad faster.

GPU encoding seems to have been more of a proof-of-concept & PR excersise.

Quick-Sync looks interresting for my next upgrade...
