hi i am an amd 64 person at the moment.....but can some one please explain how the intel processors work?....like i dont understand.....bus speed and FSB and super high rams?.........i dont get it really.
 
eh, nothing to understand. Its pre historic technology that they cant seem to get away from.

FSB is the frequency at which the cpu communicates to the ram I believe, so 1:1 dd400 means both are running at 200x2 cause its DDR.

As for the latest shit with DDR2, you are better off googling, that stuff gets more complicated.

Eitherway dont worry for now, amd is still faster. The only time you will have to start aquiring this new knowledge is when AMD starts using DDR2, then shit is gonna get freaky.

it works just like ddr... 266x2 = 533 (roughly) and 333x2 = 667 (roughly)
 
You press the power button and the system posts....Not being a smartass...But a proc's a proc to me...There's all the bells and whistles, but in my situation if it posts, that's all I care about....
 
no im asking like what is the bus speed and FSB and such....and how would i buy compatible ram....cuz i dont understand DDR2....im not putting intel down or anything
 
i dono much about intel either its wierd since its backwards for intel the ram runs faster than the fsb so the divider works the other way around 4:5 something like that, it has something to do with the memory controller not being built in the proc
 
wow... has it already gotten to the point where poeple dont know what a Front Side Bus is?

the northbridge controls bus speed on the p4 platform. just like it did with Athlon XP, Athlon, K6, K5 p3, p3, pentium, pentium pro... you get the point. the processor "talks" with the northbridge, and the northbridge talks to the RAM, AGP (or PCIe) and other high speed interfaces. it also talks with the southbridge, which controls slower interfaces, like PCI.

so, for current intel platforms, the Front Side Bus is the speed at which the processor can talk with the Northbridge, or 800mhz (1066 for EE, 533/400 for older chips) this is a quad pumped bus, so while the memory is running at 200mhz (or 400 effective, for DDR) the FSB is running at 800 (200x4). Note: for 1066bus chips, you need 266mhz ram, or DDR533. So, the chip talks to the northbridge at 800/1066mhz, and the northbridge talks to the ram at 400/533mhz. This is oppsed to teh a64, which has its memory controller on the die of the processor, so the memory is run at cpu speed/cpu multiplier for DDR400, in other words, a 2ghz chip will run its memory at 2000/10 = 200mhz.

now then. with intel chips, if you havent figured this out yet, the FSB is faster than the speed at which the northbridge can communicate with the ram. 400mhz as opposed to 800mhz. DDR2 helps alleviate this problem. using dividers, you can set your ram to run higher than the base clock speed of 200mhz, to give more bandwidth. the system is based off 200mhz - 800mhz is 200x4, and 400mhz is 200x2. if you run a divider on the memory, it takes the 200mhz, makes it higher for hte memory so, if youre running a 4:5 divider, youll get 250mhz on hte ram, instead of 200mhz, resulting in DDR500 instead of DDR400. voila, instant bandwidth. the higher you go, the more bandwidth you have. the a64 can do this same thing - when you set the memory to DDR500 in the bios instead of DDR400, the memory will run faster than clockspeed/multiplier. itll use a different multipler (in this case, divisor) to get the memory's base clock speed, making the RAM run faster and giving the system more bandwidth.
