how would a sys such as mine compare to an xbox 360, technically speaking?

well considering that they are totally different graphical flavors, (ATi vs Nvidia) thats tough to answer. All i know is that the Microsoft rep at my work showed us interviews where ATi spokesmen said that ATi will not release a graphics card that can counter the xbox 360 till 2007....i personally took it with a grain of salt, but we wont know till we have the 360 in our hands. ;)

Nope, Given ATI's track record, 2007 might be hoping for too much, given these paper launches and all. The spokesman was probably hinting at 2007 as the year when we will finally see volume X1800 shipments :D

i was speaking clearly from a standpoint of gaming power. :p

when you have a system designed only for gaming and try and compare it to a system that is designed to do multiple things you really cant expect a fair result. its like taking a dump truck and comparing how much it can haul compared to a old geo metro. might as well just hand over the award and forget it ever was asked.

The microsoft rep was probably referring to 2007 being the year we get a GPU for PC that has unified shaders and EDRAM which will probably be 2007, since I dont even think the R600 is supposed to have EDRAM. We may very well get computer systems faster than the Xbox360 before then, but for the sake of marketing that is what Microsoft says because the GPU's wont have the same features to match  .

well he said the microsoft rep showed interviews of an ATI guy saying those things.... so I'll stand by what I said earlier.... expect volume shipments of X1800 series cards in 2007 at the earliest ;)

You really can't compare. I mean game systems are dedicated only to gaming whereas computers are geared towards processing many tasks...
What are you asking to compare? Performance, quality, what?

quality/performance comparisons.

It depends on what you are doing:
"Rumors and some game developer comments (on the record and off the record) have Xenon's performance on branch-intensive game control, AI, and physics code as ranging from mediocre to downright bad. Xenon will be a streaming media monster, but the parts of the game engine that have to do with making the game fun to play (and not just pretty to look at) are probably going to suffer. Even if the PPE's branch prediction is significantly better than I think it is, the relatively meager 1MB L2 cache that the game control, AI, and physics code will have to share with procedural synthesis and other graphics code will ensure that programmers have a hard time getting good performance out of non-graphics parts of the game."

and FWIW:
"At any rate, Playstation 3 fans shouldn't get all flush over the idea that the Xenon will struggle on non-graphics code. However bad off Xenon will be in that department, the PS3's Cell will probably be worse."
