How does a molex pin extractor work?

If you look down inside the molex connector you'll see little tabs (barbs) sticking out from the sides of the pins, keeping them from pulling out of the plastic. Same theory as a fish hook, goes in but the barb keeps it from coming out.

The tool just slides over the pin and pushes those little barbs in, so the pin can be pulled through the plastic from the wire side.

They work pretty well actually. Just be sure and spread those little barbs back out when you put the pin back in the connector, so it can't come back out by itself.

Does the tool do this as well? Or will I need to find something small to stick down in there and do it myself?

The tool I have doesn't...I use my thumbnail to spread them back out. They bend pretty easily. Be careful though, they can be bent too far and snap off.
