Well recently I tried to install McAfee, cause my norton had expierd. I installed it and it told me to restart like 20x becuase of updates every time you came into windows. On top of that it slowed my startup time from 20 sec to about 5 minutes. I run McAfee and it says to uninstall it and reinstall it. I thought oh well maybe there was a virus or somethin that stopped it from installing correctly, so I run panda it finds some stuff. I try installn McAfee again, it tells me to restart, and then my computer doesn't want to log back into windows!, i start gettn pissed cause this whole ordeal took about 4 hours of my break. I wait and try logging into safemode, no go. I check if hdd died no, i dunno. I reformat, and it works fine. But its been 3 days since i reformatted and my hdd is making weird sounds like clicks and beeps, and stuff. and it freezes for breif instances. it looks like it completely freezes for like 4 sec. and then continues. Nothing special going on except itunes, aim, word, and internet explorer. Is this a sign that its gonna give up soon? Its been about 3-4 years since i bought it, specs are in sig.
 
You should run chkdsk in the Recovery Console, run the drive manufacturer diagnostics, and also run IOMeter
 
I ran my manufacturer's diagnostic and it failed the hard drive self test, I tried to take save the results but it wouldn't let me. So, after the test, because it required me to run it outside of the OS. I came back into winodws for about 4 minutes and then it stopped working it froze up and locked up and made like beeping sounds from the hdd like digital not from speaker. So then I shut it completley down and restarted it nothing it just keeeps on restarting when it gets the the splash windows screen. I think its dead :mad: I hateit cause i had just finished reinstallin all my programs on it again. Any suggestions? It said something about a bad sector and that it was a critical error so :(

Edit: Is there any way to retrieve my precious information?
 
Another thing to rule out would be the ribbon. I had a maxtor doing the same thing, stating the drive was bad, smart failure, click of death, etc. Changed the ribbon and the drive booted fine.. No more clicks, no more smart failure, etc. And it's still working fine today.
 
Ill try that, however, I also tried to save my info by putting the hard drive into my dell downstairs and when i enabled it in bios and it started up it did the chkdisk thing, and it said that 48200-48205 or something it couldn't read and then dt did step 3 of 3 and then it said completee but it dind't move on so i forced shut down and un did it. I was afraid that the things it was deleteing was on the other hdd but i guess not. What else can i do?

Edit: Ok, i tried new ribon no go, I did CHKDSK on my computer it found 1 or more errors, i decided to FIXBOOT and it fixed it and it worked, but will it stay up?
 
Update: I found out what Seagate's diagnostic tool said it said the following:

Recommendation:
Many times, these errors may be repaired through normal system maintenance which includes using the Windows provided "Defrag" and "Scandisk / Chkdsk / Error Checking" utilities.
 
Could it be that my windows install copy is bad?
Cause, now its giving me blue screens and stuff. When i restart it gets stuck at bios splash screen and stays there and sometimes luckily it goes past it and back into windows.
 
run seagate's (assume that is the HDD manf) surface scan tools. They will tell a lot about it's status.
 
It passed the quick test but it fails the extended test within the first minute of the test, I bought a maxtor drive, installed OS, ran maxtor's diagnostic and the maxtor is fine, but the seagate keeps on giving me problems so i just decided to transfer the files, and put the seagate in storage if i happened to forget anything. :rolleyes:
 
Your seagate is quite likely still under warranty you should really RMA if it failed Seatools.

If it fails it gets replaced no questions asked.
