How do you store hd content on your pc?

I have an HD DVR from my cable company. I have several shows/movies stored in there and it's half full right now. Is there a way to store those HD movies/shows to my computer's hard drive? What kind of software/hardware do I need? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
Does anyone have any insight as to what file system the drive in the DVR would use? It may be possible to throw the hard drive in it into a computer and copy stuff over, unless its encrypted.
