How do you resell branded systems

I had a couple customers ask for prices on new systems. After putting together a quote on hp systems I went to hp direct and their selling price was $50 below what I can buy much slower systems for.

My question is, is there any way I can offer branded systems for a fair price. I could care less about profits. Systems are just a foot in the door type product to sell other related services in my opinion.

I've looked at signing up for with the HP reseller program. But with ongoing certification maintainance and the fact that other much much bigger resellers complain about the same undercutting prices from hp direct, I don't think it would help any.

The only thing I can think of is to sit down and guide them through buying a system from hp direct. They'd come out with faster systems and $150 better after rebates even if I charged a consultation or finders fee.


Question two is can I search these forums from google? I've tried site:www.hardforum.com but it doesn't seem to work.

IBM's not an option after they shipped 9 of 10 new jobs overseas. Nobody wants white boxes and gateway machines are impossible to get ahold of.
 
I would reccomend custom systems for an individuals needs. Heres an example:
Bob walks into the store and says "i need a new computer, i dont know much about them but whats a new computer runnin these days?" You then proceed to ask him what he uses it for. If bob has a son who plays video games, youll probably want at least entry level graphics. If his wife needs to print out recipes on the internet then he'll need a printer. He'll also probably like the option of choosing what it looks like. Youd walk him through this process until he arrives at a good conclusion for his personal budget. He may not want a cd burner, but he may want a dvd player/5.1 speaker system.

In other words the cookie cutter mass produced approach is fine for some people, but many others prefer it the other way. Yes some large oems offer "build your own system" But it cannot compare with walking into a store and sitting down with someone who isnt in a differant state, and someone who will still remember you the next day.

More or less thats why i dont sell hp/compaq or dell systems.
