How do you know when a PS goes flaky?

what are some of the signs of a flaky power supply?

ive been experiencing computer freezes, reboots and at bootup (sometimes) shows no hard drive or sometimes no cd rom and sometimes no video card.

i think i just answered my question

The kind of weird issues you described can indeed be attributed to a bad PSU, but it doesn't have to be the (sole) cause.

Much of what you have happening may be a bad CMOS battery (boot-up) and a flakey PS. Exactly what PSU do you have...list your system like you see in my sig, please
twajetmech

Check your voltages too. I had a low 3.3V rail. That's what my Sparkle 300W did before it died.

Eh, my new Elitech 500W on Monday. It kicks ass, bitchy at first but if you're going to put up with it for the first half hour, it's great :D

went and bought a 480Watt Thermaltake power supply and it seems to be working, now the problem only happens 1/4 the time.

someone else told me it might be my powerbar/surge protector that it may have too many things that draw lots of power from it and maybe to split it up or even try another plugin or split up the draw between protectors. I will try this tomorrow.

Yeah, if you got an old surge protector, just toss it and get a new one. Its a worthy investment in getting a decent one too.

On the stability issues...if you were stable (no lock/freeze/restarts) and out of the blue are experiencing them all, at an alarming lvl of frequency, i would agree that it is the PSU.

I don't know why it wouldn't completely remove the problem when you got a new one...as you sed its 1/4 of the time. It should be 0/4 of the time...so maybe a bit of the problem still lingers (other component weaknesses).

well i ran memtest again and let it go all night...

it came across 1 error on pass of 7 (but it did pass 7 four times) at 92.2mb

i can throw any program at it and it runs flawlessly with zero errors. well at least the power supply did help somewhat, but im thinking now its the mobo :(

went out and bought a UPS (APC Backups XS 800) and all my problems have been solved!

my house has a bad ground fault (so says the unit and the software)

just thought id let you know that the UPS fixed everything  :D

Good work on narrowing down the problem. Many would have exchanged every part by now in their frustration. Now that you've realized that your home has less-than-perfect power, you might want to invest in a UPS with AVR which is good for cleaning up the occasional mild surge or other power-related anomolies. Power hardware is definitely a "you get what you pay for" type purchase.

umm.., it does have AVR buddy :) a quick google would have told you that :)

it also has USB hookup, auto computer shutdown, blah blah blah...its got everything

Since when does the BackUPS line have AVR? I was under the impression that only the SmartUPS line had those features

just reading from what it says on the box:

7 power outlets
telephone line protection
automatic voltage regulation
usb connectivity
auto shutdown software

battery backup 800Va 540Watts , made by APC and its in a blueish box, bought it from futureshop for $130can and for an extra $30 i got a complete protection plan (or whatever you call it)

Well, I've been having problems with crashes too. It's likely my PSU. Hopefully my crappy RaidMax will last until black friday.
