How do you display programs on second display?

I just bought a 15" LCD as a companion monitor to my laptop. The problem is that I don't know how to get programs to be displayed on the second display. How do you do that? Thanks.
 
Make sure a window is resizable (not maximized), and then drag it over to the other monitor (usually on the right of your screen, unless you changed it). When it's over there, you can maximize it.
