How do you design your projects?

I would like to start a project with my brother. We have enough time and resources at my dispolsal to complete a worthwhile mod. We do however lack one key aspect of a successful project, that is a great design to work with.

I want my case to have this kind of a theme:

Rectangular instead of pyramidal for practical usage.

I do not need the gold trimmings, or elaborate crystal top. I care more about how the paneling looks. There are all kinds of cool ideas we are thinking about (blue/green/off light toggle switch) but we dont know how to put it all together.

I am not a cad designer, I am a programmer. Please give me any suggestions on how to come up with a working design.

SketchUp is what I use for designing. Why?

It's easy like MS Paint to get started with. It really is that easy. You can quickly design your case, and easily rework it till you get what you like.

Beyond that? Photoshop, sketchpads, and sometimes a 1/2" drill. (Don't ask about the drill.)

paper + pencil = winner.

Learning a program like sketchup or cad for one project is absurd. Use what you were taught to use your entire life :D
