The way the processors are now, it is very hard to figure out which chip to go with.
I am going to upgrade one of my machines to a PCI-Express setup and will probably go with an intel chip but I am not sure which one to choose.

The machine I am upgrading is the main one in my sig, going to trade up the 7800GS to a 7900GT and put the mobo/proc into another case and use the 2gigs of memory in the new build.

I was looking at teh Presler chips and there are like 4 or 5 of them to choose from from $180 or so to over $1000.

I am looking to only spend $350 for the proc and mobo and I want the best for that money (The video editor machine in my sig is being sold for $350, so that is where that dollar amount is coming from)

thanks

so umm you have $350.... get the processor that fits into that price range?

simple

well you dont need the btx version unless you plan to get an intel btx board which there are only a few if i recall correctly
i would suggest the 930 if your planning on ocing as that is the best bang for hte buck
i personally have a 950 es and i can say that it is quite a decent overclocker but the 930 could do the same

and also your statement for there being too many Presler cpu's to choose from is not correct as there are only a few just with different heatsink variants and the few that exist are differentiated by speed so all you had to do instead of make this thread was to look for the one that fit your price range
btw expect to pay around $100-$150 for a decent board for it if you plan to oc it

Why not wait a little while and get the Conroe?
im thinkin boards are gonna be pretty expensive for conroe
expensive compared to the boards we have today of course
and i dont just mean that cuz its gonna be a new product so always expensive type of thing

That isn't necessarily accurate.

There are going to be 3 motherboard tiers for Conroe. I am talking about discreet motherboards here no IGPs or anything like that.

975X with the Core VRM11 spec 250-300 CAN

P965 with ICH8R 180-200 CAN

P965 with ICH8 130-150 CAN

For example the ASUS P5B, Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4, ABIT AB8 are then names of some upcoming "mainstream" Core Architecture supporting motherboards.

Just get the motherboard with the P965 Chipset and ICH8 SouthBridge and the motherbord won't be too expensive in the slightest. It will be reasonable for a new motherboard.
