How Do You Build A New Internet?

Researchers believe it is time for a new internet and they are actively looking for the money to build it. The project is supported by America's National Science Foundation and has a timescale of ten to fifteen years.

Researchers in the US want at least $350m to build the Global Environment for Network Innovations (Geni), touted by some as the possible replacement for today's internet. In Europe, similar projects are under way as part of the EU's Future and Internet Research (Fire) programme, which is expected to cost at least £27m.

how do you remove a good amount of freedom after it has already been given? Tell them its the next big thing!

Seriously though, with broadband proliferation falling seriously short especially in the U.S., this is lol.

Sad but probably true....Anytime there's a discussion of upgrades or the future of the Internet, there is an unspoken undertone that suggests the reasons why this would be done is not for the technological advances in productivity, access, and speed, but to make it locked down, policed, and it seems most all, no anonymity. Sorry, but I don't think the Internet should be viewed the same as someone walking down the street at night.

Luckily, it will probably be eons before this happens. Analog cut-off for television has been delayed for how many years now? So let's just overhaul the whole Internet meanwhile....just think of how many companies still running Windows 98 and 2000 are finally upgrading to XP....Better act fast!

I got a feeling they want a revamp due to Fraud, SPAM, spoofing & security. The Internet is the odd, because it is one of the few inventions that has made such an impact... AND the inventors are still alive. I can't remember their names exactly, but they didn't expect the much needed security that THEY would have put in place, but they never expected the internet to go public.

I'm all for that, but I'm sure the RIAA would like to place DRM content. Imagine going to a website, and having it all blank, since even the jpegs are DRM.

just think you go to get on H one day and you get a pop up telling you need to buy windows xx to get on this sit. click on this link to buy windows xx for $ 1000. i can see Ms making the internet be like dx 10 and only working on the new os not the old ones lol

The first TCP/IP-wide area network was operational by January 1, 1983, when the United States' National Science Foundation (NSF) constructed a university network backbone that would later become the NSFNet.
from Wiki...

It's not that old Robo...

(I know this isn't the first instance of a network/internet, but the stuff before it was limited to a small group)

Just what exactly is wrong with the current internet?

My thinking exactly.

Hell, we cant even get ISP's to run internet out to remote towns here, but they want to build an entire new infrastructure?! LOL @ that idea.

call up every plumbing supply place in the country and be like "WE NEED ALL UR TUBES NOW!!!111theinternetagain"

From reading that article I dont' see how any of those 3 ideas are going to work.

First they want to have a way to make sure you know the age of your visotors and that the vistors of a site know that is really the site they want to go to. The first part of that is going to be almost impossible, however any thing that they could do to try to do that would allow them to track you better. Only things I can think of is to have you enter your SSN, drivers license number, some new madeup identification number they give us, give blood sample or finger print or something like that before you can sign online. Numbers can be gotten from somebody else so that won't work. Blood could be gather from somebody else and finger prints lifted so that again isn't going to work. There really is no foolproof way to ensure somebodies age. Same goes for site verification, there really is no way to be 100% foolproof that you are at the site you really think you are.

Trying to group computers into smaller groups sounds like it would just create more of a bandwidth bottleneck than actually make things more secure.

And having everyone store the entire internet on their own machine? Not sure about the rest of you but I dont' have a server farm in my house to store that much data.

To me this all just sounds like a way for this group to get a crap load of money.

IPv4 is inherently insecure. With IPv6, a lot of those security concerns would dissipate. I do see new challenges with people in IT trying to understand IPv6 better.

Yeah, you know, 'cause Microsoft has jack to do with how the internet actually works.
Can't say I'm against it so far. I'll have to wait and hear more info about what's actually going to change. I'm more in favor of revamping the physical internet. Gov't and corporate subsidies for all-over fiber coverage? Now THAT would be a nice addition. :)

I really don't see how storing content (Teh whole internets!111) locally makes anyone safer. Having a hard copy of the data would allow hackers to execute offline attacks with ease. In addition, 100 TB drives are pretty costly right now. Their mesh idea is great in theory but it would require a complete physical overhaul. That isn't going to happen considering that conventional broadband access isn't available in many places yet. Its a pipe dream coming from people that really don't fully understand how the technology works nor the involvement in deploying it.

I think the trouble with this article is that it doesn't convey precisely what Geni is. Why? Because the researchers working on it don't know what it is either! That's the point of "research!"

Im not sure about this particular project.... Ted Stevens might be the cheif consultant on this one. Perhaps ive misunderstood the article, but its best summed up as "Omg child pornography, identity theft, and hackers! We will build a new internets." along with a paragraph on automated driving of cars.

Building a new anything, wont solve the mentioned problems. It doesnt make any sense.

Irregardless to all other points, the main reason for this is so the government can intergrate itself FAR more into the internet then it is.

Imagine how it is now, all the layers of Government layed on TOP of the internet.

Now imagine the internet layed on top of the Government.

THAT, is what we will be going for.

I forget, who created the internet again? :p And what did they created it for? ;)

Next people are going to freak out next time we're in a war and the gov't wants to close down a few interstates so they can use them. :p

Frank Zappa

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre. (1977)

Oh, stuff it.
10 to 15 years is quite a development cycle, even from initial concept. And remember, in case you didn't catch on to the thinly veiled sarcasm we presented earlier, it was the government's system first. We just made it grow and work for itself.

the next true vision will imho be wireless. comprised of satellites and such. there is oo way to cleanly upgrade the wired system, and wireless bandwidth is huge.
