AMD XP-M 2500+ (no HSF) - $88

Total: $303

Here's my recommendations:

512MB A-Data PC3200 - $72
MSI K8T Neo FSR - $86
A64 2800+ retail w/HSF - $185

Total: $343

Whether overclocking or not, I'd take the A64 over the AXP any day.

Edit - On second thought, I'd defintiely get a nforce250 board like the MSI K8N since it has agp/pci lock.... but that adds another $40... but hey, if you're gonna do it you might as well do it right :)

My budget is (was) around 300 US
I could get my initial selection for 415 CAN (307 US)

Cheapest retail A64 2800+ is 280 CAN (208 US), but a retail A64 3000+ is only 30 CAD (23 US) more, so I assume it would be worth it.

MSI K8N NEO PLATINUM is 190 CAD (140 US)

Kingston ValueRAM DDR400 512MB PC3200 137 CAD (102 US)

Total with A64 2800+ = 607 CAD (450 US)
Total wiht A64 3000+ = 637 CAD (473 US)
 
under $300?

abit nf7 - $65 ish or abit nf7-s $85 ish
amd mobile 35 watt 2400+ $87 (get the 1.35v or 35 watt version..)
and get a single 512mb stick of ram... you can get a matching one later if you want.. your budget for the ram depends on which mobo you choose...

i don't know if you can do newegg in canada...

but yeah... get the 35 watt mobile, and a single stick of ram.. and whatever mobo you want... but the nf7 is a good deal...

I say if you can hold out, wait, somehow earn more cash for the A64, it would be worth it. Seriously. (well, in my opinion anyway).

If you're gonna shell out big bucks, make sure it's for something really GOOD.

Current setup is xp 2000+ , gigabyte ga7vax, generic 256mb ram.
I have enough money to buy almost any parts, I just don't need it/want to spend that much.

what about a cpu cooler ?


Don't listen to any of those athlon64 users, because if your not into gaming or any high end using like that you should be pretty fine with a 2500 Barton. But really it depends on what kind of budget your on.

He's willing to spend $300, but a few bucks more is out of the question?

On top of that, he already has an XP2000, a decent performer.

I am not an A64 user, but I have built one for a friend, and I think it would just be plain dumb to spend 3 bills on such an aged platform when a new platform and new technology is only a small percentage more... :rolleyes:
 
An XP mobile should be overclockable to 2500MHz which would be XP3600+ performance. At the least, he'll be able to overclock to 2200MHz = XP3200+. All that for 147 US dollars less than the 2800+ A64...
 
hmm.. i just recently spent $320 between my shuttle and cpu on an aged platform... but it is faster than any computer i have used before... i will wait a year or so and then get me an a64...
