how do print servers work?

When using a print server, is it necessary to be on a specific "domain" or "workgroup" to use the printer?

I would think not since you aren't going through another computer. So a benefit of a print server would be that anyone can use it even if they are not part of a specific domain or workgroup?

Thanks for clarifying this for me.

probably depends on what access rights you open up for the server

It all depends on the access rights that are configured on a server. Once you "share" a printer, you give rights and access to it. You could specify everyone, or specific domains, workgroups, or users.

I am using an HP Print server on my network and it only uses an IP and subnet mask in the settings.
I didn't even have to configure it, I just plugged it in, turned it on, hit the test button and it printed out a config page with the IP that the DHCP server assigned to it and then I just added a printer port in my printer settings on my PC to print to that IP address.

I guess I should have replied with a question. Did he mean a print server appliance (device) or an actual server dedicated to printing?

Print server 'Appliances' have made true PC based Print Servers obsolete. If you are sharing on a work group, use Windows File and Print sharing protocols. Than map the printer on the other PC's.

If you are on a domain controled network, and you want anyone that uses a DHCP assigned IP address to use the server, open the assigned IP of the server up to the domain users. If you want to restrict You must 'lock' off a users privlage to that IP address.

It all depends on what you are using as a domain controler. Its all about policies, and privilages.

Key Points:
Workgroup - Use a print server appliance or share an attached printer, and map it on everyones PC.

Domain - Use a print server appliance, and assign rights to that appliances IP address. Use your servers user rights module/applet. Hope that helps.

Cheers,
