How do multizone receivers work?

I have a very small room that is packed with a ton of electronics. I have my TV hooked up to my Sony home theater in a box type receiver for sound along with my ps3 for 5.1. The Sony receiver is audio only and is about as basic as it gets but it does the job just fine.

I'd like to upgrade to a multizone receiver so that I could hook my PC up to the reciever and use a nice pair of bookshelf speakers instead of this POS Creative 2.1 system. The TV and PC sit at a 90 orentation to each other so if i used my current Sony surround sound with my TV I would be getting most of the sound coming from the right side when at the PC.

If I got a multizone receiver could I set up one 2.1 zone for the computer and a 5.1 for the TV?

I believe the 2nd zone preamp is always analog only and it's only 2ch. So it would only be 2.0 unless you get a splitter or something, but I find that to be messy and I wouldn't bother. Just get a 2.0 that does bass really well. AKA get tower speakers :D

Oh dang I didnt realize that the sub wouldnt be used. I guess a multizone receiver isnt an option any more since I dont have room for some huge tower speakers :(

Well, it depends on the receiver, I think? Most receivers I seen are usually 2.0. But then I haven't shopped for a receiver for a couple years, so maybe they made one with a sub out.
