How do lcd's get dead pixels?

How do lcd monitors get dead pixels? Is it because they are produced with them? Or is it because they were damaged sometime during shipments?
 
Dead pixels is a production problem, small parts of dust coming into the panel during fabrication make the dead pixels.
 
Well why don't they make them air tight :confused: :rolleyes: I mean they make HDD's air tight cause dust/dirt on the plates = dead hdd...why not do the same for lcd monitors??? do they need air circulation or something???
 
a dead pixel occurs when the transistor that controls a pixel is destroyed or stops functioning. this could be caused by anything, not only dust in the manufacturing plant

Yup, they are actually manufactured in a “clean room” in huge panels. After that they are cut to size and tested. What works after testing is called the “Yield”. The big reason LCD prices have actually come down so much is production is much better with higher yield rates.

If the back of the panel is mis-handled during production you can lose pixels that way too. Shipping can cause issues as well, an internal panel connection that works during assembly and testing can come lose with rough handling.
 
It's amazing if you think about it actually. There are millions of pixels on each screen, and you can't expect each and every one of them to come out without defect. They are approaching this though, just as better manufacturing and internal remapping made bad sectors in hard drives a thing of the past.

This also happens with wafers in CPU production. There is no such thing as a 100% yield, and that is why you'll get CPUs from the same batch certified at varying speeds (and why we get overclocking hehe). But dead pixels can also occur during the life of a monitor, with failures increasing as it ages.

misconception. They're not air tight, dust free yes.
