I bought a set of speakers that are 5.1 surround sound. My motherboard is the ASUS P4SD-LA.. the specs sheet says it can output 5.1 surround sound (or 6 channel) but the back only has a line out, line in, and mic in. the speaker has a plug for center/subwoofer, rear surround, and line in.

how do i work surround sound with this motherboard?

You should, in theory, have multiple inputs for the speakers: Speaker, Center and Subwoofer. Try to plug in your speakers in the input (line in) port and see if your front left, front right, rear left and rear right are surround.

I believe on some of those mobos, that when you set that option to 5.1 on the mobo, that all three of those ports work as the three plugs, which in turn sucks, because you cannot use the other ports for their other intended purpose. Also check the manufacturer website and your manual for help.

ahh the mobo is OEM, i dont have a manual, the one i found online is quite useless... neway if i bought a soundcard (AOpen AW850) its a cheap 20$ one.. will it make much of a difference in terms of sound quality compared to the onboarD?

Yeah, it should, but im not sure about that type of sound card (im a Creative guy). It would also take less cpu utilization from your processor, seeing how a sound card has its own. Which in the end would help the performance in games, and I assume some apps.

Nope.
Most of the cards in that price range use exactly the same codecs as many onboard solutions.

(the aformentioned AW850D features the C-Media CMI8738 codec)

i just want the motherboard to give me 5.1 surround sound.. since it says 5.1 (6 channel) and that i bought friggin surround sound speakers
