how do i share files over the network?

Forgive my absolute noobness, but im tryin' to share/stream over my network

I have

1 modem
Asus rt n16 router
Win 7 desktop hooked up via ethernet
2 win 7 laptops connected via wifi

I would like to stream the movies & music i have on my desktop to the 2 laptops over wifi. Just read access, so they can watch tv shows..I guess that would make my desktop the server?

How would i go about making this magical thing happen?

No offense, you sound like a noob with networking and that's alright. For you, the easiest would be to setup a Homegroup and share the stuff that way. If you go to networking in Control Panel you can set it up there.

I tried that before, and when i got to the laptop, i didn't see the option to "join" the homegroup, only create a new one.

Everything is on in the sharing settings
