how do I paint my case?

So I want to paint my the case of my old spare computer, and I know just about nothing about painting. I've read up on some articles and know the procedures, first sanding the case, then spraying on primer, then sanding again, and then spraying on multiple layers of thin paint. However other than that I don't know much.

I'm not looking for anything brilliant, just a different colored case. Can someone enlighten me as to what paint I should buy and how to differently prepare metal and plastic?

Can anyone suggest a specific product for my project? I don't need anything fancy, just your basic primer and paint.

Rattle can or are you using a paint gun such as a conventional or HVLP?

In the case your not using a rattle can are you wanting to use single stage or a base coat clear coat system?
 
As far as rattle can goes...I have not messed with a fair bit of them, however I would go with a custom mixed paint from a good auto paint supply store, but if I HAD to pick a off the shelf paint I guess it would be VHT, and I only say that because I have used it on a quite a few engine blocks and seems to hold up well.

I know more than a few people who rave about Alsa's "Killercans", but I have never used them, and at almost 40 bucks a can I don't plan on it.
 
I have used krylon fusion to paint plastic for computers and other stuff, and been happy with the results. Drill this into your head, and repeat it over and over and over:

MANY THIN COATS

Nothing will ruin your paint job faster than getting in a hurry and trying to get everything all at once.
 
I went to home depot and picked up Rust-oleum primer and paint. Just tell them what you're painting and they'll grab the right kind for you.

And like svetgar said, many thin coats. I went a little quicker with my paint job and it didn't come out as good as it could have, but it's alright..
