Apologies if this is posted in the wrong area.

I have two large hard drives onto which I intend to rip all my dvds with the aim of streaming them back on my ps3. I have a lot of space so I would like to rip them losslessly i.e. with no compression and at full resolution. What would be the best format with which to do this? And what would be the best free software to do this ripping?

I currently stream mp3's and avi. files to my ps3 via the wmp11 media server service so I was hoping I could carry on doing this. cheers

the PS3 does not (natively anyways) support mkv.

You want h.264 / mpeg-4 based .mp4 or .mpeg files. I've been using Handbrake to make h.264 mp4's of everything and the streaming has been working quite well!

if you have mkv's, there an app called mkv2vob

it just tosses the mkv's into mpeg containers, takes about a minute for a 2gb MKV, works just fine :)

The ps3 does not play mkv's directly, but streaming video via media server will allow mkv playback on the ps3, i've done it using TVersity

Why are you telling him to use Handbrake.. He does not want to encode.. He wants to DEMUX his DVDs w/o any lost of quality.

But to answer your question. I demux them with DVD Decrypter. Then mux them into AVI or another container that the PS3 supports native. You will lose DVD menu's just a heads up.

Use DVDFab to rip your disks. You can keep the menu's and everything with that.

I use PS3mediaserver to stream any home videos that I have to my PS3.

I have a tutorial wrote to help ppl out. http://blog.hillbillyhardware.net/?page_id=605

Please keep in mind, that ISO support isn't there if you wanted to wrap everything up that way. Your best bet is to make a .m2ts file since that extension works well if you don't want to use a MKV file.

WMP12 works great for streaming to PS3 so there's no unnecessary programs to install on your system.
