I've got some Kingston HyperX KHX3200/256 that I think is BH-5, but I need to confirm it. Is there any way to make sure short of removing the heatspreader?

If no, is removing the heatspreader dangerous?

I think removing the heatspreader is the only way...And no it isn't dangerous...

removing heat spreaders is not major cause for concern, just be careful while you are doing it. I think the best way to go about it is to run ur system for a while, preferably something that will stress the RAM a bit so that it warms up nicely and softens the TIM. once you have done this and are sure the RAM is nice and warm and the TIM will have softened up a bit take the sticks out of the system, slide off the metal clip holding the heatspreaders one and carefully try and lift the spreaders off, you might need to slide em about of a bit and use a thin screwdriver to break the adhesive forces holding em on. Just be careful and you should be fine.
