I have a computer tha uses an Intel Celeron Processor. It only has 248MB of ram, and I was told this wasn't enough for good game peformance. Is there anything I can simply buy from a store, install in my computer, and effectivly raise the RAM level???

What kind of system/model do you have or what kind of motherboard are you using?

All I can say is that it's a cheap computer. Fairly new Compaq Presario, with Intel Celeron CPU operating @ 2.53GHz. Just looking for something I can buy and install to get more avaiable RAM. I was told the CPU speed was okay for moderate gameplay, but was also told the avaiable 248MB of RAM was a limiting factor. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What model Presario?

I can check what the memory requirements are and see what deals are out there.

LOL, ok I am not a big fan of compaq, but i'll help u anyway :p , I'd say its probably PC 2700, so i'd go with a one gig stick of Corsair Value Ram (PC3200, but it'll run at 2700), like 120 bux at tiger

1GB PC3200 $96.86 at the Egg

But we still have to wait and see which Presario the OP has, to make sure it'll even take 1GB modules.

Sorry for the lack of information. I've never been a hardcore computer wiz. Anyway, there's a number on the computer that says "SR1103WM". Not sure if this is actualy a model number or what. The operating manual that came with the computer simply says "for S0000 / SR1000 / SA4000 / 8000 computers". So I'm not exacly sure what model I have.

Thanks for the help.

That's pretty neat. I'm amazed at how much you guys know about this stuff. How hard is that to install??? I'm not afraid to take the computer apart, but does it just snap in or do you have to solder it or anything???

If you're looking to run games, you will probably need a video card as well... Do you know if your system has an AGP slot?

No AGP slot in this one. OP has old-school PCI and onboard only *winces*...

If you want good gaming performance you're probably never gonna get it with a celeron processor and onboard video. You know how I know this? I owned a comp like yours for 1.5+ years. If you have a low budget like I did back then, then I guess more RAM will help. Also consider a cheap PCI video card, probably would be better than your onboard video.

There was another recent thread on here where some guy was looking for the best PCI video card he could find, and I think the consensus was a Radeon 9100 series, as it is based on the old 8500 instead of the newer, crappier low-end core that the 9200 was based on.

To original poster: what kind of games are you looking to play? Depending on your answer, it might be a futile fight trying to get a non-agp / celeron-based system up to spec. Or, you might be just fine with a 9100/512+ mb ram. It all depends on what you're trying to do!

Well I bought a PCI video card, and there seems to be some change in the performance. Just looking to get rid of the occasional lags in the gameplay. I think adding some RAM will help, because it's not too bad right now the way it is. I mainly like to play Microsoft flight simulator and DOOM 3. Oh, and it turns out I have product # PC182A. So if anyone can tell me if those above chips will work, I'd appreciate it. Also, do those chips replace existing ones, or do they get added on somewhere???

You'll never get acceptable Doom 3 performance with a PCI video card. :(

With a Radeon 8500, you *may* be able to run some older FPS games like UT2004, but Doom 3 is very demanding on a video card; the minimum to run it acceptably is a Radeon 9500, or maybe a GeForce Ti4600 or something.

You'd really have to get a motherboard with AGP support.

Yeah, Doom 3 is quite a resource beast. I would recommend saving up some cash to build a new computer instead of wasting resources/time trying to upgrade your not-so-upgradeable computer.

Sorry buddy :(

Keep your eye on the Hot Deals and For Sale/For Trade forums. You can probably get good parts for cheap by buying them periodically instead of all at once. Easier on the wallet this way. If you want more memory for your system now, you can do so if you plan to upgrade to a system that will use DDR1 (and you should be thinking about an A64/NF4, because for the performance it's cheaper to go that route

).

Okay guys, I appreciate the advise. I will definetly be buying/building a better computer in the future. For now though, if I can just squeeze a little more RAM out of my current machine, I'll be happy. Does anyone know if my computer can accept something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820211130

Again, fairly new Compaq Presario. Model number should be PC182A. Intel Celeron processor.

Thanks again for the help!

You would probably be safest running 2 sticks of 512, but give Compaq a call to see if 1gb sticks are supported.

According to the link I provided above, your system is not compatible with 1GB modules. You can call Compaq/HP to be sure, though. If not, then you'll want to check into the link for 2x512MB I posted earlier. Good luck with it, bud. Let us know if you need anything else.

Forgetting how scalable Doom 3 is are we?

He may not be able to play it at 16513161x80955 with 28x SSAA, 42x SAF in UU quality at a constant 100FPS, but he can play it alright (20-40 FPS) in 640x480 or 800x600 depending on the texture quality.

I've seen Doom 3 playable decently on a Radeon 9000, granted it was AGP. But with a large frame buffer the importance of bandwidth is decreased as most data is already there. Plus he'll be playing at lower resolutions with low-medium textures. He should be A-ok even in Doom 3 as far as frame buffer size goes.

He said he has alright gameplay, but with occasional hitching. Which is a symptom of file swapping, caused by memory shortages. RAM should be his problem.

Get some RAM. When installing make sure you line the spaces in the pins on the RAM up with the bridges up with the same spaces on the motherboard's ram slots. It should take some force to get in each side all the way, but if it seems like too much make sure you're lined up right. Or else your computer won't be booting anytime soon.

I will definetly look into it. Thanks for the help.

sticks of RAM would be what your shooting for lol

....another satisfied customer....

SuperCell - don't miss Crucial's web site. They have some of the best and most complete compatibility info (as in, what fits / works in what) going.

Have fun - B.B.S.
