How difficult is it to replace a chip?

This will be my first time replacing my processor and it looks pretty simple. From what I understand I just have to take my old heatsink off, take out the old processor, switch in the new one, put the new processor in, new heatsink, and go.

Am I missing anything big?
 
Real big....don't forget about the thermal paste if the chip doesn't come with a self installed TIM.
 
yeah .. thats about the long and short of it.

but...

you gotta know what socket type you have, and weather or not your motherboard will support the chip you want to upgrade to (e.g. not all P4 motherbaords will support all P4 chips) beyond that there is the fine art of getting the correct application of thermal paste, but that depeneds on if you really care/plan on oc'ing

you can get into lapping the HS while its out... again.. not needed, but it will help temps, if done right... screw it up.. and it will ruin temps.. and thats about the most you can do with the processor its self...

yeah.. theres that whole pin orrientation thing... ohh.. and not dropping them during the install process.. thats a big one... bent pins suck...
 
The processor installation guide comes in the box with your new processor (assuming you didn't get an OEM one) so read it thoroughly and know exactly what you're going to do. Get a clean work bench with lots of space and light, gather the needed tools, and then go slowly through the steps once you start.

It's gotten alot easier to do over the last couple of years, though. I just recently did maintenance on my old AthlonXP rig and I really didn't enjoy having to pop that stock HSF on and off with a screwdriver, again. Whew, hair raising experience, every time.

Haha, couldn't agree with you more there. Just finished scraping a few rigs. Kind of disagree with it getting easier though, still have some socket 7 procs and mobos where you didn't even need thermal paste between the heatsink and proc, or at least there never was any used :)
