How CPU limited would I be if...?

I put a X800XT, 6800GS or 6800GT with this system:

P4 2.8b northwood 533fsb
1gig pc2700
enermax 320W psu

BTW: I play mostly Source games, BF2 and Unreal 2004

I have a 17" LCD so max resolution is 1280x1024. I would like to be able to play games there with some AA. or at least 1024x768 with AA

I have almost identical specs and have been looking into x800xl's, 6800gt's, etc. lately. I think it would work fine, but not as optimal as a 3.0 or greater processor. I just second guess dumping any more money into AGP, when I know I'll eventually build something new with PCI-E.

my first instinct would be to go with the gt or gs, but to be honest, i'm a bit worried about that psu.

a lot of people are overly concerned about psu

Our powersupply forum isn't much of a help there with lots of people claiming "You need an OCZ 500W powersupply!" whenever anyone asks for a recommendation

I agree that people can be quite overzealous about psus, but especially those gen of cards require a fair amount of power, and I don't think that a 320 is going to do them justice. i'd suggest picking up a 400 or 420 watt psu...i'm looking at a thermaltake on newegg right now and its only 40 bucks..

You can get an Antec or Enermax 500 watt PSU off Newegg for under $100.

thats cool

If his current powersupply can handle it then buying another one is a waste of money and resources

thats true, but at 320, its going to be very anemic with those cards. in fact, i'd be willing to bet that if he dropped a 6800gt in there it would reboot when he played source

Noted about the psu. I am currently running integrated graphics.

Yikes...;)...I'd definitely pick up one of the cards you mentioned. CPU limitations are game based in some cases. I think with a 2.8b, you'd be limited in some ways, but not enough to warrant getting a lesser card. Any of the choices you mentioned in the OP should be fine. You may/may not need a new PSU. A 420W Thermaltake should get the job done for $40 or so. But you can wait and see if your current one handles it. Just be ready to get a new one if it doesn't.

i'd agree and say that any of those cards are fine, but if you're willing to pay for any one of those cards, i'd suggest this 850 which runs for 250 after a 50 dollar rebate (REALLY inexpensive). not only will you be able to game your heart out but it'll have more of a resale value later on. while any of those cards are great choices, i'd jump on this deal if i were you.

Definitely...as the supply of high end AGP decreases, that card will be in demand since it is one of the fastest out there.

Yeah the x850xt is right around the price/performance I was looking for..I will look into a good 400w power supply and call it a day til the M2. Thanks guys.

Check out my specs on my sig... I don't have any problems with any games. I don't see why you would need a 3.0 gig cpu... but the 533 bus is kinda dated.

I say, any of the cards are a good choice, but you will probably need to upgrade your PSU.

Your processor is a completely different architecture and mhz to mhz isn't comparable to his.

Edit: also his psu is fine as long as he hooks his cpu to one 12v rail and his graphics card to the other.

Source games are very CPU limited, so graphics will help, but not make everything perfect.

oh :D *twiddeling thumbs*

you're right!

about the psu, don't get a thermaltake. At LEAST go with antec or enermax. I'm sure a 450-400w enermax/antec will be stable enough on the rails for whatever you throw at it. A TT won't. TT has a very bad rep, especially with psu's. They tend to lie.
