so i bought a 9800Pro last night, used it for about 3 hours or so, then all of a sudden my PS craps out and kills the power to the PC. PS is burned up, i could smell it right away. So i swing down to CompUSA today and pick up an interim PS for $20 til i can get an Antec or something.

Well, i get it installed and fire up the comp, but my Epox board is hanging on post code 75 (Detect IDE drives). It wont detect my 80gb WD slave drive (backup drive). I have about 10 gigs of data on there that i have collected for years and years (ripped my entire 200 cd collection) along with other odds and ends of things that i have picked up over the years (programs i liked, stuff i downloaded, etc). Basically stuff that i willl have a very difficult time replacing.

So i unplugged all my drives and boot with just my master HDD, boots fine. Plug in my cd rom and my burner, they work fine. Plug in my WD, wont boot. Tried every different config i can think of with no luck. Tried diff cables and everything.

Now if i boot the WD as the Secondary Master drive, it will detect on boot up but the computer stops loading at the Win2k screen for some reason.

Is there ANYTHING i can do to at least get my drive to boot so i can get some data off there? How the hellwould this have happened in the first place? How could NOTHING else have been damaged except this one drive???

its a 300W generic PS....compusa brand, i think its a powerman or something like that.
 
I've had damaged drives stop the Win2k boot process before.

The easy fix I found was to stick it in a Win98 box I have... in the two cases of drives that stopped the 2k boot process, the '98 box booted, and ontrack disk recovery software was able to rescue some files.

Of course, if the drive is NTFS....

For kicks, you could try turing off DMA modes for the secondary controller... you never know, using PIO might help <shrug>

Hey, i wonder if using an usb drive connector like this one http://www.dansdata.com/usbadapt.htm and plugging in the drive after windows has booted might also work...
 
yea, the 98 idea wont work if the drive is NTFS... could try it on an XP computer and see how it goes.

good luck bro, i feel for you... sucks losing a main HD full of odds and ends
 
is it possible that the your crappy temporary PS isnt pushing enough juice? maybe your HD is fine. get a new PS asap, you dont want this one blowing out and possibly taking some hostages with it.
 
If you cant get it to boot try an external caddy with the slave in it and boot in to windows and cop ythe stuff over. When my main drive died I got a new drive kept the old one in a freezer for a few days in a ziplook bag put it in a caddy and I got everything off it.
 
I was working on a PC and had that exact thing happen, PSU blow (it was some generic POS) and it took the WD HD with it. Tried to boot using the damamged HD but not joy, it kept getting stuck at the same spot your getting stuck at.

If anything it taught the lady to get quality name brand componets instead of generic. ;)

I talked to WD and it's possible to get the drive working again, you have to replace the circuit board with one from an EXACTLY matched WD HD using the serial numbers.

wouldnt taking the circuit board off expose the hdd platters to the atmosphere? meaning lost data and fuxord hdd's?
 
no, the circuit board on the bottom does not expose the platters at all.

The circuit board itself only has one connection that actually goes through the drive's casing.
