I have an E6600 running at stock on a DS3P motherboard with cooling as per my Sig and I've just run up ORTHOS to load it all up. Should I really be running at 58/59 degrees with this setup? I was really expecting it to be lower I guess and am worrying I may not have got the compound on the heatsinks right.......

And now I've understood the answer to one question. My motherboard fan control is set to Auto, I noticed that the CPU fan was running at 650rpm and the system fan at just 1000. I turned this off and a small helicopter started in my workspace......
Now I kinda liked the quietness and the auto setting is set to trigger when the processor gets too hot and start the fans going quicker. New worry for me is that EasyTune reads temperatures 10 degrees lower than CoreTemp and Intels TAT. Now if the MB is also underreading my poor Processor might be at 78 or so before the fan kicks in properly!!

Your IHS is bad. I would recomend lapping your IHS. If you can stay right about 70C with Orthos temps thats about as far as I would go.
what are you basing this on?
IHS=Intergrated Heat Spreader (the silver square on the top of the CPU that the heatsink contacts)
Here are my temps for comparison.
Obviously, the biggest factor is ambient temp. If your room is 80 your temps will be high no matter what (talking about air cooling). If the temp is 70 then temps will be lower. When people say they idle at 29c with their processor oced to 3.3/3.4, i just take it with a grain of salt. Either there ambient temp is like 65 or they want the biggest and I mean BIGGEST epenis

GAMING temps - 52/50
LOAD temps - 66/64

I idle at 30c with mine overclocked to 3.25Ghz constant.
....or were you only referring to the E6600 big dogs?
