how come fan splitter cable has a pin missing?

at the 2 x female side, 1 connector is 4 pin, the other connector is 3 pin w/ the 3rd pin missing. And they are all like that.

Why is that?
 
Third pin its the report RPM cable, a fan splitter only need and only will report the speed of a single fan... the other simply will feed from the PWM of the other fan (or in the case of 3 pin fan/splitter from the voltage of the main fan) you can't control 2 fans at the same time with a splittler. that's why one of the RPM report pin are missing, the motherboard will become crazy if receive 2 different's speed from the same connector. as remember, the motherboard detect each connector as a single fan and will treat as a single fan..
