I sold the SSD in it to get a bigger one, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do a fresh install of Lion on it and get rid of my personal data.

I can't seem to make a bootable lion cd; anyway to do it without one?

I booted with Command + C, used Disk Utility to wipe it, then used the Lion internet recovery to reinstall.

I used a bootable lion USB stick. IIRC pretty much all you have to do is find the InstallESD.dmg or something like that and use disk utility to copy it to a USB stick. And you have to make sure that under partitions then options that it is bootable.

command + R to load up the recovery installer.
open disk utilities and erase the drive.
reinstall lion.

DONT click "install lion" before erasing, that is basically just going to do an archive and reinstall.
