How bad is this for my system?

okay, right now I have an old APC UPS that I know is far too weak to be running the system thats in my sig. I've lost power in ver turbulant ways a couple times happin all day today. When the UPS kicks in my monitor makes a buzzing noise and the image becomes very wavy and twitchy (much what it looks like when there would be a tremendous amount of AC interfierance in the power.) Now how bad is this for the machine itself and the monitor, and how urgent is it that I immediatly get a new UPS, or should I just take it off it? I should probably add that i have enough time on the UPS to shut the machine down, I havn't tested how long it will keep it up for, but I'd imagine not very long. Also, I was reading another post about UPSs, do you guys think I should upgrade to another APC or a Belkin UPS?

....sounds to me like the AC output of your UPS is dropping low enough when it switches, that the monitor "thinks" it's being turned on and de-gausses itself. You could prove this for yourself is you have an oscilloscope that will allow you to look at 120 VAC. Some probes (active) don't like anything over 50 volts or so, so pay attention to the little writing on the probe....

Personally, I'd take that sucker off line, pronto.

Yea, thats what I was thinking. Would brown outs and power flickering be worse then whats happening when it goes out though?

Also, for my next one, I've heard belkin is a very good UPS maker. What would you guys go with?

APC.

...ditto. I ran APC's on a small server I managed (once upon a time) and it was rock solid. The reporting feature helped us diagnose an AC problem with our utility. Man were they embarassed when I showed them the logs, showing the power going off at 0200 every night...... Their answer; "....jeez, we thought no one would care..." Right.....
