How bad is the 6100 integrated graphics?

I have been looking online for a comparison to other dedicated cards, but couldn't really find anything. What does the 6100 integrated graphics compare to? Better or worse than a Ti4200 64MB?

I would say it's a little better than a 4200 because it supports DirectX 9.0c, Purevideo, SM3.0, etc. The 6150 is probably the best intergrated graphics you can get hands down. However a seperate 6200\6600 that can be had for under $100 will blow it away.

If you have absolutely no budget for video, it's pretty decent. I would consider investing in a better graphics solution though.

Well, budget is excessively low. I'm looking to build my dad a rig for Christmas. Going the 754 route. The ASrock 6100 mobo is about $63 on the egg. I figure that is about $10 more than a cheap 754 board that doesn't have the built in video. A 6600GT would be perfect, but that would add another $100 that I don't have to the build.

The only games that I know he has ever played are Spider Solitare (no problem there :) ) and the Myst games. I figured that if he ever got into playing something else, he could always slap a 6600GT into the PCIe slot and be good to go. I just really don't have much of a budget right now.

I am looking at this system:

ASrock 6100 mobo
1GB (2 x 512) OCZ Value Ram
Sempron64 3000+
NEC DVD Burner
Antec MidTower Case with 350W PS
Keys/Mouse

All told, that should be about $380.

I already got him a 250GB HDD on Black Friday for $59 after rebates. My sister is going to spring for a 17" LCD for him too.

I think it will be a pretty decent system. He is certainly not a gamer, but has just retired and will probably be looking for things to ocupy him throughout the winter.

Any advice?

i have built about 10 computers using the biostar 754 board with onboard 6100 graphics. As far as onboard video goes, its probably one of the best. But its still not too great in the world of graphics in general. I tried playing COD2 on the 6100 graphics, it was pretty laggy at 640x480 with low detail :(

But for $59 for the board im not complaining. I highly recommened this board by the way, not a single problem with the numerous ones i have used.

Let me also just state that I hate building budget systems! It is soooooo much easier to go all out! :)

should be about the same. I like asrock (have the dual-sata2 in my personal rig), but I just use the biostar because i have used a lot of biostars over the years and its also cheaper.

Yeah, I know they both use the same north and south bridges and have all the same features. The BioStar is $1 cheaper, but $3 more to ship. I figured I would save the $2 by going with the ASrock. :)

I like the itegrated graphics on this mobo. My biostar version has not given me any problems and it plays anything 2D without any problems. I play counter strike, and with the integrated it gets pretty bad, even on this old game. If he is still gonna play myst, im pretty sure it will play, but not at an enjoyable level.

I am using the integrated 6100 on my Pc right now (waiting for 7800GT to arrive), it is pretty bad. Here are the games I've played (or atleast attempted to play) on it and how they run.

CoD2: Unplayable in DX9 mode, maybe 10-15 fps max in DX7 mode.
Madden 06: Pretty much unplayable
Age of empires 3 : Runs good if you turn everything all the way down
The Movies: Runs okay (only played tutorial though)
Need for Speed Most Wanted: Runs okay at whatever seetings the game defaults to (which are really really low).

So if you are looking to game it would probably be better slap a video card in there, but if you arent all Non-Gaming stuff runs great on it.

Well, I have an old GeForce4 Ti4200 laying around here. Do you think it would be better to get an AGP board and slap that in instead of the 6100 mobo?

The Ti4200 / agp combo will be faster. I just built my brother an office computer with the Biostar board and 6100 integrated video. In games it was a tad slower than another computer that I just built for a guy, running an AXP 2400 333 bus cpu with a Geforce3. The Geforce3 system was faster in games.

You will have more trouble if you go that way. If you use integrated video the performance might lag,... but if you try to play a game that requires directx 9 and the 4200 won't do it, you won't be able to play at all.

That and buying into AGP isn't smart because its a dying technology.

They are gonna tell you left and right not to go agp. Agp is not dead. You can get a 6800gt agp, and that will last you for a long time, at least until your system is way out of date. The 4200 isnt a performer anymore, but will be considerably better than itegrated graphics, even the best on the market to date.

True, but going AGP so that he can use the 4200 is not smart. If he is going to buy a video card in the future if he wants to upgrade, he might as well go pcie. The only time that I would recommend going for an agp motherboard would be if he had a high end agp video card that he wanted to use (or at least an up to date one). As it stands, it just wouldn't be smart to get an agp boards, when pcie would leave him with more (and mostly cheaper) choices for a video card if/when he chooses to upgrade.

I agree TheTMan. There is no point in getting an AGP board. Especially when the Ti4200 won't solve the problem.

I was considering a 6200TC PCIe card, but won't that be about the same performance as the integrated video?

Like I said before, this comp will be for my dad. He is certainly not a [H] user. He is running a 700 Duron right now. I don't know if he has dedicated video or not, but it wouldn't really matter since it would be so outdated anyway. I just wanted to do something nice for him for Christmas, but don't really have the money to get all the parts I would like to get for him.

I guess going the 6100 integrated route would probably be best for a couple of reasons. the first being that I don't have much money at all. The second is that the only games I know he would play are the Myst games that would definitely run on the integrated graphics. The third is that by going with the 6100 board, he will have a PCIe slot should he find out later that he needs more graphics power.

Smart move considering the available options? About the only other things I could pull off would be an AGP board with my Ti4200, an AGP board with a 5200, or a PCIe board with a 6200TC. Seeing as all those options look like they are all going to provide such poor video performance, I might as well go with the least expensive/most easily upgradeable solution. What do you think?

By the way... thanks for all the input so far. I do appreciate it.

The 6100 motherboards do have a PCIe slot open for future upgrades, so that is not a bad way to go, but considering what machine your dad is coming from the Ti4200 agp will be a huge upgrade as well. No offense, but some people on these forums will have you convinced that you need a 7800GTX for your dad to play Myst on.

You may not be able to play BF2 on the machine, but does your dad even care? I would go with whichever is cheaper. One of my buddies is happily gaming on the XP2400/Geforce3 agp box that I just built for him. It was a huge upgrade from the Pentium3 500 Gateway he had before. He did not have much money, so the box was built on an extreme budget.

thats a tough call. b/c the 4200 is way faster than a 6200 or 6100 integrated. But if you went the AGP route, you'd limit your future upgradeability. So better instant gratification or better performance down the road (if/when you get a new PCIe card)

A ti4200 is actually a very fast card. (considering its age. It supports DX9, its just not Hardware DX9 capable)

I just upgraded my brother's computer from a ti4200 to a 6600. And his 3dMark2001 score was about the same 10.9k vs like 10.6 before the upgrade.

I didn't have time to bench anything else. I know 2003 & 2005 score would be a lot higher on the 6600, but mostly b/c of the DX9 features more than speed.

Now if you went with the 6100, you could hold off and get a MUCH better card later on, as newer faster cards continue to come out.

I'd probably sell the ti4200 go the PCIe route, go with a motherboard with out integrated graphics... and scrape some money for a 6600 (maybe the new 6600 DDR2)
