I have a p4 2.8c and a aero4 lite heatsink w/ arctic silver 5 and my temps are 30c idle and 38c load............are these temps considered to be really good?

Those are AWESOME temps, assuming the mobo is reporting right.

FYI, different mobo brands report RADICALLY different CPU speeds. According to my Abit board, the CPU in my sig runs at about 50 C idle and about 64 C under full load (hot room, no air conditioning - winter temps are about 6 C lower). Asus mobos read much lower temps.

what mobo you using? and my abit ic7g reads 45.5 ilde 59.5 full so if u have an abit ur in good condition

Well, perhaps that is because you're running a total of 9 or 10 fans in your system (I've included CPU and PSU fans in the total count) - and at least some of those fans are so screamingly loud that they can drown out even a (very powerful) home stereo audio system. :p

On a more typical 2.8C-based system with a total of just three or four moderately quiet fans (like mine), my reported temps are about 46°C at idle, and above 50°C at load.

My rig (in sig) runs at 33 idle, and 44 under load. Very very quiet due to Sonata with 2 * 120 fans and the Zalman cooler. I also run speedfan to keep things real for both 2D & 3D work.

My other box has an old Slot-A Athlon in it (700Mhz) and that thing makes a hell of a racket. Then I added 2 * 80mm fans and it went from bad to worse.

If you're looking for some peace & quiet (some people don't care I guess) then you'd do well to go with 120mm fans. Otherwise, your temps are pretty damn good :)

Let me clarify this:
This assumes that you're using only one or two 80mm fans for the exhaust, no fans for intake, the stock Intel retail-boxed CPU cooler and a fan or two in the power supply unit. Larger fans do cool better, but are also louder than smaller fans at equal RPM speed.
