i will try and make this brief. i have never overclocked anything in my life before because i have always been able to afford decent hardware. however in the last few months, games have suddenly overtaken my rig a little. i like to run everything maxed out but QUAKE4 and FEAR are stressing my system a little.
fx55
a8n-sli deluxe
2gb samsung ram
2x 6800gt
i overclocked my cards with coolbits to 405/1100 from 350/1000 and am pleased with the results.
aquamark 82000
3d mark05 10200
what i want to know is, is this getting near the limit for these cards, i dont want to damage them, the temps are up a couple of degrees with no artifacting. they have zalman cu coolers on them.

pfft, if you're crying over your antiquated hardware, you can stop, no one feels sorry for you ;)

I dont have a 6800 but just as long as it doesnt artifact its fine. Use some intense game to test for artifacts or benchmarks like 3Dmark05. Once get get artifacts go down 10mhz. I go up at 5mhz each time and than test. What are your temps right now? And learn to turn down settings instead of bitching about how you cant run a instense game at max everything.

Replace those AGED 6800GT's with some 7800GTX 512's... and more ram.. and an fx-57

What kind of useless advice is that? You only need 2Gbs...and his CPU would make not alot of differents >_>

Your PC is fine...But you have to expect that going with the highest settings in the lastest games is well pushing old tech like your 6800GTs. Just hang in there and expect to be putting down the settings.

But if you want to I'd be selling up your 6800GTs while they are still worth money and try and get yourself a 7800GTX...or maybe two if you have the money. And you'll be set for all the lastest games once again :)

thanks party, my temps are 58c idle and 72c after an hour of BF2. i know i could turn down the settings a little, but i would notice. i will try and push the cards a little more as soon as someone assures me i wont do any damage.

I would tune it down a little bit just so your cards wont crap out after a year of running like that. I dont know what the normal temps are for the 6800GT but i'm assuming its pretty high.

those temps are fine...and his cards wont crap out after a year...and plus if they do then he can always get new cards...im sure he has the benjamins :) :p ;)

BTW people dont overclock because they cant afford better hardware....

i wont have these cards for a year, overclocking them is a stop gap untill i can upgrade in maybe 3 or 4 months time. i do like my sli setup and have considered 2x 7800gt. whadya think, does that sound reasonable or should i sell one of the kids and get gtx`s.

no keep these until the new dx10 cards...what res do you play fear and cod2 at? + aa/af?

You've got a nice system, I'd just drop the resolution a tad to hold you off.

mayhs, it was fear that first got me thinking about my cards. i was used to cranking everything up to max at 1280x1024 but fear struggled. i run it at 1152x864 all textures at max with 2xaa and 4xaf, soft shadows off. anything more and i get a bit of slowdown.

ur bitching about that, god. with my setup i can barely pull off 5500 3dmarks but fear and quake4 run fine @ 1280*1024, settings at medium high. i would keep ur cards where they are at and when the new vid cards come out, get them then.( and stop ur bitchin) :D

aw cmon guys i was`nt bitchin, i only wanted advice on my cards. i dont have money to throw around and i didnt want to do anything silly with my overclock. i am just addicted to eye candy. dont make me a bad person.

Apparently a sense of humor skipped a generation in your family...

hmm really really weird...with my x850xt pe i run FEAR at 1280x1024 with 2aa/8af with everything on max...except soft shadows...

but i dont think games will be more technically advanced than FEAR...and if they will be, lets hope they have better coding...to make it easier for our comps to run...because FEAR had shite coding...but the game was awesome :D

thats good.. I can only pull 4.2k in 3Dmark03. Quake 4 is unplayable on my computer even on lowest possible settings.

Omg... it's kind of sad how you start to worry when you're hitting 10k on 3d benchmarks.... I get approximately 3900 on 3dbench 05..... so stop crying.... if you really want better performance, just go out and buy another card (or two, depending on the amount of $ u got), instead of telling us about how you can't run something at 1600X1200, High graphics, 6X AA, 16X anisotropic.....

no idea mayhs. thanks to all for your help. i will keep these settings and replace the cards in the summer.
