How Accurate Is The BIOS Temperature?

I think the title says it all...
I have my XP 1700+ (1.47) OCed to 2.0.
My FSB is up to 200 from 133.
My video card core (Ti4600) is up to 324 from 300.
My watercooling loop includes the CPU, chipset, and GPU core. I just ran two instances of Prime95 on the heat stress test for an hour, then check the BIOS. It was 36 degrees. Does that sound tight? Is that good? Too high?
 
Does your mobo report a diode temp (pretty accurate) or a socket temp (usually inaccurate)? Either way, the time required to exit your OS and get into the BIOS allows the CPU to cool down a lot. You need to check your temperature while the CPU is loaded.
 
How do I find if it's diode or socket? And How can I check while I'm still in the OS?
 
You can ask the board maker by email (unlikely they'll even respond) or ask here and other forums if anyone knows which sensor your board uses.

As for temperature monitoring, in the win world Motherboard Monitor kicks ass (even though development has stopped) and Speenfan is great too. For Linux, LMsensors is best.
 
Ok, I'll do both :). I'll write an e-mail after I post this, and ask here now... It's an Asus A7N8X, one of the "older" ones, like version 1.3 I think. Not a 400 or ultra or -x or any of the other models. Anyone know if it's diode or socket?
 
Thanks a lot for the MBM tip, this thing is cool. Running two instances of prime95 torture with heat mode selected for about 15-20 mins(?) I'm getting 34 Socket, 42 Diode, 28 Case. I think I'm about 23-24 Ambient. Is this good?
 
Yep, that's decent. But, two instance of P95 is not helpful, one CPU one instance (your CPU spends a lot of idle time while the two processes and their data are swapped in and out of cache). Or for a better heating program use burnk7 from the the cpuburn suite here.
 
not very accurate. it's only good for comparing stock vs aftermarket cooling for that same exact cpu/motherboard.
