Playing around with new i7 920. DO stepping, Batch 3903A. Temps seem too high for me even with the lower 1.112 core voltage. I think I'm gonna turn it back down to 3.0 Ghz, 20 x 150. This is all on the stock retail heatsink.

well you already answered why its running hot.. you are trying to overclock on the stock heatsink..

its all about ambient temp.. if you noticed.. his room is already well over 30C.. which means the processor on stock cooling is going to be about 10-15C higher at idle.. the stock cooler sucks.. it wouldnt be as much of a problem with a higher end hsf..


all you have to do is the math.. find your room temp.. find the idle temp on the processor.. that gives you the delta with the heatsink you are using..
 
yeah, I have it closed up inside the case. Ambient is 26-27. This was the second mount for the heatsink. I might be able to get a little better, but I don't want to waist too much time on the stock heatsink. I was just surprised to see how high the temps were getting with such little voltage. I prolly missed the window to get a really good clocking chip. I wonder if I should have asked for a CO stepping?

the i7 runs hot no matter what.. just look at all the i7 threads in here.. anyone overclocking.. their load temps are all between 75-95C when stress testing..
 
Thanks I was finally able to get a decent cooler on it. That was a quick and dirty o/c. I haven't had a chance to mess with anything other than cpu and vdimm voltages. I couldn't get it to run prime at 215 - 220 bclk, even running the voltage up to 1.375 and vdimm at 1.7. I can however get it to run at 200 with only 1.300v. Hopefully I will get a chance to spend some time tweaking later in the week.
