HOT 920D??? IS this even possible?

So, new 920d, arctic silver 5, stock HSF, no OC is being reported between 70-90 C by intel 945 MB. Is this even possible? It seems to want to idle @ 70c. I didn't have any issues with the install - when I first booted the system the bios said 92c, and I thought BS, bad sensor. Any thoughts on how I can verify this?
 
Touch the heatsink while the system is on. If it doesnt feel warm, then it has poor contact with the core. If it feels like its 70c.... either invest in better cooling, or consider exchanging the 920D for something that'll run at a somewhat more reasonable temp.

I agree with this man. Software monitoring is notorously inaccurate. Believe me, you'll know it if you touch a 70-90C heatsink (definetely give you a blister, be careful).
 
OK here's what you do:

run dual instances of Prime95

after about 30 minutes, check temperature

set up a camera, point it at HSF and then do the finger test on the HSF
.

the HSF should feel about 10C cooler than the motherboard is reporting. If it feels barely warm to the touch, you don't have good contact. :D
 
re-seated the HSF, cpu temp dropped to 60c. Still 30 degrees high! Im going to prime95 it now. Notice that the fan is only turning at 2200rpms - that seems low to me? This is all with an open case, btw.

Ah yes, I had this problem at work. It runs the fan on low until the CPU is in the danger zone. Then it winds up and once the CPU is below danger zone it goes back to low. You need to go into the BIOS and disable something along the lines of "CPU Fan Control." If this is a genuine Intel board, it should be under Advanced --> Boot. This causes your fan to run at full blast.
 
the IHS on these processors seem to suck big donky balls. like REALLY BAD.

how would a better HSF work? If anything it would just mean youd feel dumber when your 60$ heatsink let your chip fry :p

lapping kit? PAH! Bench grinder i say!
 
wow, the ihs seems to be warped in the middle or something. rma the chip for a new one before you end up frying it and they blame it on you.

That's almost funny if it weren't for the people buying them, oh wait, it is. :p ;) I would rma it.
 
isnt the base of the retail intel heatsinks still round?

what does the bios read for temperature? that temp is way too high...either it is being reported incorrectly or you have bad contact with the ihs and heatsink base...
 
nearly every heatspreader I've seen on Intel chips is higher on the edges with a cup in the middle. Some high grit sand paper (>200) and a flat surface is all you need. Lay the sandpaper on something very flat, like a piece of glass or countertop.... then put the chip flat on top & move the chip back & forth to take some of the edge off.

When you're done you'll probably see a little bit of copper around the edges. Also be sure to apply enough thermal grease.
 
I was getting sort of hot temps with my 930, but after inspecting the waterblock, I noticed that I did not seat it correctly, I haven't put it back together to verify that this was my problem. I'll let you guys know later on.
 
lapping a brand new CPU and destroying the warranty doen't sound to exciting :)

I keep having the same temp problem, after a few tries I inspected the cpu and block and you can tell the contact is not the greatest. I know it's not my WC system because my x1800xt gets good cooling. I may try a different block, or I may sell it and try buying a different one. I really don't feel like lapping it since I wouldn't be able to sell it at a good price. Oh well.

plenty of boards raise fsb slightly over 200 mhz...so you are basically overclocking the processor (even though it will be less than 100mhz)...

warranty's on cpu's are a joke...if it works fine to begin with then it will last 10 years if run at stock voltage/speed...overclocking might shorten it's life depending on how hard you push...but who cares about a processor 5 years from now? it will be like a 386...

if you dont want free performance then by all means keep your warranty...this isnt exactly the place to be touting warranties...

i like warranties on hard drivers and such, not processors...two different animals...

yea, warrentees are a joke, however there a kids out there who dont know that anything can void your warrentee. the one thing i hate is RMAing when its your fault you killed it. the warrentees are there for those who run at BONESTOCK and nothing else. 1 or 2 mhz wont kill you, but if you go higher then say 5mhz, like 205 fsb, then its basically void.
