So, I value [H]'s community highly and was wondering what you all thought were your top 5:

HIDS:

and

Host Base Firewalls (personal firewalls):
 
Free or Commercial

Command line or GUI

User Friendly or Non-User Friendly

Fast or Slow

....
 
Comodo Firewall for Windows, it includes some good HIPS features.
I gave up using a dedicated HIPs as they rapidly become a pain in the arse!
 
I would also recommend Comodo for a Windows firewall.

For linux the choice is made easy. Use iptables and if you want a nice GUI use fwbuilder.
