Hose Clamp Questions

OK, so I'm about to get started on putting all my new stuff together and had a few questions, as this will be my first foray into water cooling. What do you guys use for hose clamps? I opted to not buy the little plastic jobs that Danger Den has for sale on their website. Do you guys recommend using those metal worm drive hose clamps or zip ties or what? I am using 1/2" ID tubing throughout. Here's a rundown of the specs of my new system:

Asus PC-DL motherboard
2 - 1.6ghz lv Xeon processors from the [H]ot Deals thread a while back
2 - 512 Corsair 3200
2 - 160G Sata Seagate Baracuda w/ NCQ
Antec 550 EPS12 power supply

cooled with:
2 - Danger Den TDX Xeon blocks
Danger Den D4 pump
Black Ice Xtreme 120MM Radiator
New style Danger Den Bay Res
ClearFlex 60 1/2" ID tubing

Any thoughts on the best style clamps to work with would be appreciated!

go to home depot.. go to the gardening section and buy the metal hose clamps.. the ones that use a flathead screwdriver.. then you can tighten the crap outta them

I use zip-ties and a zip-tie gun to get them tight. Very economical and with the zip-tie gun you can get them very tight. I use 2 or 3 zip-ties per fitting with the zip heads staggered. No leaks either.

Also, the zip ties come in different colors to match your system. :D A local discount tool retailer sells them in bags of 100 (all diferent colors) for about $3 a bag. Far cheaper than metal hose clamps at about $1.49 each.

Oh they easy to take off...or did you mean take off without cutting ur tubing?

Too tight will just bend and or break the fitting and tubing and cause leaks. Good and firm is all that's needed. Depending on the area, I use all 3 of the major types, zip ties, steel worm drive clamps and plastic squeez clamps. I've never had a leak in the 3 different systems thay I've had.

I've never heard of zip tie guns, I have to look into that.

Got mine at Home Depot. Can't remember how much it was, but a good guess is around $9. And you get to use it for so many other neat things too!

but not as easy to take off and not reusable

True on both counts. To get them off I use a small side cutter and clip right behind the zip-tie head. You can damage the tubing as well, but only if you really dig the side-cutter in hard. As far a re-usability, at $.03 to $.05 a piece who cares.

Not likely, the clamp will strip out before you break the barb. The tubing is something to look out for, though.

I use zip ties and to get them off I use a single edged razor blade, and cut very carefully. They'll snap once you've gone far enough and you won't cut your tubing. I've done it many times and have yet to cut the tubing.

had leaks with the metal worm drive clamps and switched to the black plastic double grips...used in 4 systems :) I buy in bulk from McMaster so cut'em off and toss'em when making changes...
