when i use my usb3 i see transfer speeds go from 35 to 20 to 15 then it drops to 10MB/s. i have a GA-880GA-UD3H http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128444

it shows 2 x USB 3.0

i installed renesas electronics usb 3 host controller.
driver ver 2.0.30.0
firmware version 3021

i am transferring from a 7200rpm black drive to a hp touchpad that comes with a usb3 cable. i tried both ports. seems i get better speed from 1 port vs the other. the other port used got me 10mb/s not the 35 to 20 ect.

maybe the touchpad can't write faster than that, so any data transferring into it just takes forever

Doesn't the touchpad used flash-based memory? If so, I would assume flash-based memory (even class 10) can't fully take advantage of USB 3.0 speeds.

The bottleneck is likely the write speed on the TouchPad. However, that's bizarre you report one port on the motherboard is faster than the other...? Are you sure that's true? Were you transferring the same files? File size can have a huge impact on sustained transfers - large (i.e. >100MB) files usually transfer much faster than small files (i.e. <10MB).

it just seems odd that they would include a usb3 wire. I was thinking since it was flash memory that it would write to it faster. I don't need data from my touch pad but to it :). The descending speed from 35-10mb/s is like 10-15 seconds. So it is not like its a huge difference. I can try the ports again. The file size i was transferring was 700mb-2gb videos.

There is nothing different from a USB1 to USB3 cable.

It could be a single nand chip or just 2 chips. How much flash memory does it have.

Actually USB 3.0 is very different. USB 3.0 is backward compatible but has new wiring and full duplex design.

USB 3.0 is full duplex (Superspeed) vs half duplex
USB 3.0 cable has twice the number of wires vs USB 1.0 or 2.0.
USB 3.0 cable supports a power load of 150mA, 50% more than USB 2.0

It is a very different cable.

i have a 16g model. it comes in 32 also. there was talk about 64, but they pulled the 64g line
to add to Chrisroman some mobos support the difference in load for faster charging devices

You cannot connect a USB 3.0 cable to a USB 2.0 device like the touchpad. The only USB 3.0 connectors that are downward compatible are the large Type A (host-side) connectors. All other (cable) connectors are only (mechanically) upward compatible and will negotiate as USB 2.0.

How did you determine that the cable is USB 3.0?

Btw, not even USB1 and USB2 cables are the same. A lot of USB1 cables do not provide proper shielding to allow a high-speed transfer, which the host will detect and negotiate only full speed.

The Touchpad is only USB 2.0 as per HPs specification. So I guess the cable is also USB 2.0.
