Horribble PPD with XP Pro??

I just switched over my folding rig from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro. I have two 9800GX2's, a Phenom II X4 940, 3GB of RAM. I also changed some of the programs that I now use to fold. I now use VMWare server 1.0.9 instead of 2.0. I'm running 2 instances of notfreds utilizing 2 cores per client, rather than running Ubuntu in the VM's. I am also running the GPU CLI client instead of the version with the nVidia Viewer. I have the same CUDA drivers installed as I did under Vista. I am using WinAFC to spread out the work of the clients across all 4 cores. My CPU is only at 1-3% with all the GPU clients running, and right about 100% with both VM's running.

I don't understand what's happening here. The last two days I was folding under Vista, I hit 25k each day. Now with XP I just hit 8,500 for today!! I really need some help here! Any and all advice is *greatly* appreciated!

Stop the VM's and see if the GPUs pick up. You might have them strangled with teh VMs. May need to throttle them down a bit.
 
Dangit! I guess having two VM's is killing my PPD :(

I killed one of them, and assigned all my GPU's to CPU0 and CPU1, and assigned my VM to CPU2 and CPU3, and now my PPD have picked back up to where it should be. Is there any way to get around this besides going back to Vista?? I'd really like to have two VM's up and running to take advantage of my CPU. I tried changing the priority of my GPU clients all to RealTime, and my VM's to Below Normal, but they are still bringing everything down.
 
In Vista, I have my GPU client set to Above Normal and my VMs set to Low. Try that and see if it helps.

+1 to this. I also run the AMD 940BE with Dual VMs (ubuntu) and GPU2 Clients (3 x 9800GX2) and it runs fine.
 
Currently running VMWare Player 2.5.3 on that box. Ubuntu VMs created via VMWare Server 2.0
 
Have you ever tried VMWare Server 1.0.9 on that machine? I'm wondering if this might be an issue due to the VM program.
 
on that box no. I only run server (well now Workstation) on one box. That is the box that I create all my VMs on. The box running Workstation is Vista Ultimate x64. All my other boxes are dedicated folders and only run XP Pro x64

It could be. I've seen different resource usage between Server 2.0, Player, and Workstation. Try just running Player and see if that does it (you don't need Server anyway since you're using notfred's).

it should because there souldnt be any performance difference between xp and vista.. so theres something else thats causing it and not xp..

but theres also to many variables into what he did to find out why.. not only did he change the OS.. he changed the VMware app and changed which version of the GPU client hes using..

No, what I mean is that he already tried manually setting the priorities and it didn't fix the problem, so using WinAFC to do the exact same thing he already did isn't going to change anything.

yeah i gotcha.. i missed the part where he has said he used winAFC already.. so i went back and read his post and a few others.. which is what the second part of that message is about..
 
Well, I'm trying out some new config settings with WinAFC, and it's looking quite a bit more promising. I notice now that with 2 VM's running my GPU PPD still goes down slightly, but between having 2 VM's and 4 GPU clients at a slightly lower PPD, and one VM with higher GPU PPD, they are about the same total in the end. I'm going to let it fold for a while how it is now, and see if I'm back at my original PPD on this machine. Thanks for all the tips so far guys! I'll keep you updated on how this turns out :)
 
Why are you running Server 1.xx?
Server 2.x is out and still free, and I ran two Notfreds VMs on my q6600 on XP Pro x86 plus two 9800GX2's with no problem.
 
Well I really don't like the web interface that comes with version 2. I had problems in the past with the login screen not loading for some reason or another. Now I have downloaded VM Player as suggested, and am trying that out. It seems to be using much less RAM than Server was using, so I think I may stick with it as long as everything stays nice and stable.
