Hooking up a Sub to 2ch amp

First off, I know very little about speakers..
Say I wanted to hook up 2 bookshelves and a sub to a two channel amp, how would this work, so I can control the volume through the preamp/amp.
Would it be something like Source/Transport -> dac -> amp -> sub(passive?) -> speakers?
Or am I totally off here?

Yes, you can pass through to the sub via speaker-level in/outs (assuming it's a typical standalone subwoofer with plate amp).
