Hooking up a 5.1 set up without a sub

Hi this is even possible?

thing is when I had my sub, it'd make this weird deep bass sound based on certain songs. Ever since that happened, I've been wondering if a sub is even necessary... my sub is the logitech x-530

would a sub make a difference?

oh and also I have a 5.1 set up, but I only want to just use 3 of the speakers. Could I hook up the 2 speakers without the sub and directly into my sound card?

any help would be great, thanks.

You cannot hook your speakers directly to the sound card. The output amps are not powerful enough to drive loudspeakers, and typically only one jack (green) is rated to drive headphones. In the set you have the amplifier to drive the speakers would be located in the subwoofer. You could just not hook up any speakers you didn't want, and turn down your subwoofer volume on your speakers if it has such a control. This is kind of a weird thing you're asking though.

first of all umm I'm sure why I need a sub in the first place, that's what I'm confused about..

Because when I did have my sub on, it for some reason messed up the bass on this one song I like, and ever since then I've had my sub volume to the lowest it can be,.

so you're telling me I NEED to hook up my sub correct? If so I'll do it.

also I could just have 3 of my speakers hooked up to my sub just working right? don't need the other 2 speakers as it's a small room. Thanks.

thanks for the help so far.

The amplifier for the satellites is inside the subwoofer. One of the MANY caveats of cheap "computer speakers". So yes, it needs to be plugged in.

Try to go into Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices. Change it from "5.1 Surround Sound Speakers" to "Surround Sound Speakers". I didn't check it myself, but according to the illustration it means 5.0, instead of 5.1. that should take away the sub. As for removing the back speakers, yes you can do it. And depending on your sound card (X-fi does), you can even redirect the back channels to the fronts. That should cover you nicely in 3.0.

I guess apparently I need the sub

ok I have everything hooked up to the sub, but for some reason only the center speaker works. Where does the green and black wire go on the X-Fi? also anything else I have to do?

thanks
