Im doing my first build and a little confused as to what power connector/s need to be used on the 3870 X2. There are 2 connections and not sure if I need both or one... I plugged one of my PSU's 6-pin PCI-E (A) plugs in and not sure if I need something in the other 8 pin or not. My PSU does have a 6+2 PCI-E plug... does this need to be in there as well?

You need both if you plan on overclocking. one is good if you are gonna leave it at stock. i'd suggest hooking up both the 6-pin and 8-pins just in case.

Ok so I hooked up both... nothing blew up lol, but still no video going to monitor

You only have one X2 in the system, correct? Did you uninstall the old Catalyst drivers, and then boot into safe mode and use DriverCleaner, and then install the 8.3 cats?

System isnt even in a case... trying to test all the hardware and its all brand new

Can you tell us a little more about the system? what motherboard, memory, processor, what monitor, dvi or hdmi or vga, etc.?

I'm guessing your power supply is large enough? I think you need at least a good 550w to avoid problems.

Hmmm......Use the Anolog to DVI adapter with the LCD , It should boot right up on any x16 Mobo doing that..

Note: Some motherboards dont enable DVI/anolog switching properly PCi-E 2.0 unless they update thier Bios on the Mobo...Some even have a fast gate boot problem where you need to disable the Express/Fast gate to enable the card at boot..
Use two 6pin per card! Make shure the Top card has the LCD Cable going to it for primary display.

P.S. It should work like a charm using Anolog.
Asus M2N32deluxe runs fine with DVI and its on the 3870x2 support as tested...
My TA770,, i have to use the DVI/Anolog adapter because of this very problem .If I dont I will get Blank screen at post...its clearly a motherboard bios problem..

The card will still work at full speed regardless of the display problem on LCD's or while using Anolog instead of DVI.;)
