I have some digital segment displays, the one that have the:

pattern. Theres no chip on them, its just bare leads that come out the back. Is there any easy way to hook these up to a thermal diode to show the temps, or do i have to visit my bros college and and have one of the computer engineers make me a homebrew chip? If i can do it i could sell homebrew thermometer readouts and crap. Cool.

It'd probably be difficult without some kind of microcontroller, such as an AVR or a PIC.

You might be able to wire one up to your parallel port and write your own software to display MBM temps or something.

By the time you buy all the components needed, it would cost 100X more than buying one in the first place.

I say scrap the idea, and just buy one.

Yeah yeah, I know this is a modding forum, but some things just aren't worth modding.

Not exactly what you are looking for but close.
I have the same type of number displays lying around my house, but I don't have a thermocouple like they use in the article. See the links at the bottom.

That display in the article accepts a voltage input and outputs based on that input, like a DVM, chances are good that your display has no such driver.

Exactly. I think it's the compunurse that is similar to this idea (although it's a primative LCD screen, as opposed to the LEDs) and I think they cost like, 15 bucks or so.

Even still, you could probably pick up a small digital thermometer at RatShack for less than 10 bucks, which is what it would cost in supplies to make this thing work.
