I'm moving into a pretty spacy apartment in a few days at school and I was wanting a home theater system where I could plug my laptop, TV, and PS2 into. However, I mainly just want it for my computer(s) and there is one in the Best Buy ad for this week on page 23. It's a Sony 5.1 Channel 600 Watt system and it costs $200. I think the model # is HTDDW670.
Question is do you guys think this is wise or should I just buy some Logitech speakers at this price? I'm kind of thinking long term so I am hoping this receiver will be compatible with other speakers later.
 
HTiB systems for the most part are a no-no. It's much better to go with a set of computer speakers in the price range you are looking for (or headphones).
 
In general, you get what you pay for, even if what you pay for is highly overpriced. ^_^ How much $$$ are you looking to spend?

Having said that, I avoid the Home Theater In A Box. They are from mass market companies that put all their profites back into their own hands and into advertising rather then audio research. (there's a famous saying that the asians are the best people at copying other peoples technology, even if they can't pull it off correctly).

If your thinking "long term", save up , and get a good setup. This is my recommendation.

At the very least, bring a CD that you are familer with, and ask them to play it for you and listen to the speakers. If its a good audio store (cough, bestbuy ain't, cough), they should jump over backwards for you.

If however, for the money, you think the sound coming out of the speakers is the best thing since Organic Light Emiting Diodes, and the receiver has every feature you want plus some... get it.

If though, you think the speakers sound worse then something out of the 1950's, goto your professional audio shops around you, tell them what you have, what you want to do, and they should guide you from there. Heck, you may even get to listen to a few speakers ( the fun part ). They can advise you on what you should be thinking about, even if they don't recommend you make the purchase today (instead tell you to save up).

If you're thinking long term, it's probably better to skip the HTIB route. Like towert7 said, save up for a better setup. Keep an eye out for good deals on receivers on craigslist around your local area and start off small with some bookshelves. Later on, you can add a subwoofer, get some floorstanders and move the bookshelves to the rear, etc etc.
