im looking to get a home theater for my pc/tv that ill be using for music and movies my price limit is around 250.im currently looking into getting the logitech z5500.any suggestions?

Based on your question I think you are asking about a Home Theater In A Box (HTIB) kind of setup? $250 isn't going to net you much, but even at that level you can do much better than a Logicrap setup.

Do you need 5.1 or 7.1 right away? I would recommend going 2.0 or 2.1 first and then adding more speakers when you have more money or raising your budget quite a bit; otherwise what you get will have very weak and poor components. HTIB setups are always a compromise, and I can't bring myself to recommend any of them.

Get a nice receiver that fits your needs, which need to be determined and a set of bookshelves and possibly a sub that fits a budget.

What kind of inputs will you need your receiver to handle? Are you playing BluRay discs and if so, with what? What are your HDMI needs? How big is the room you are using this setup in(cubic, yes cubic, feet)? How much is your receiver budget?

im mostly going to be using with with my pc sound card and and my xbox 360.im guessing ill mostly need coax and a digital optical.i need it for a medium size apartment living room which is about 30x30 feet.dont haven't really thought of a receiver budget but im willing to spend from 250-300 for all.as long as the sound is clear and the bass is good ill be happy.

That's bigger than a moderate sized single bedroom apartment space. Jesus.

Um... you're gonna be stuck with crappy sound with that budget. But crappy is relative. If you've never heard better (which is what it seems like), then just grab the Z5500 and get it over with (if you REALLY REALLY REALLY must have 5.1, which I don't think you do, but whatever).

Have fun with crappy 5.1 sound.

its most definitely not a single its a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment.i guess it could be less its sorta big though.i guess i was thinking of the apartment.in length its around 24 feet and in width id say around 19

for 250 you will be pushing it to get a HTIAB setup. For an example I have a 17 x 18 room with a home theater for my PC, Xbox360, Xbox and Wii.

I have spent around 700 on speakers alone (and its not really high end stuff either, just some polk monitors.)

What you can do is pick up a decent enough receiver and then watch for sales on stuff. I picked up a pair of R50's from Frys for 59.99 per speaker and while not the highest quality would do wonders for you. You could get just a receiver and hook up some generic speakers and then slowly upgrade. There was an article not to long ago on a setup of speakers that were 100 dollars for the full 5.1 set that didn't get to bad a review. I believe they were from The Speaker Company or something of that line.

You know what, I can do a quick vintage speaker search for you on your local craigslist. Send me a link to your location on craigslist. You can get a decent receiver for around 200-300 so I'm not worried about that department. The speakers are the ones that you need to really hunt for.

yea ive started looking at some htiab.due to the reason that i dont have a job and its going to be hard to upgrade.

ive been looking at thesewhich one do you guys think is better ?? or should i just go ahead and get the logitech z-5500?

Oh you're in LA! Me too!

Btw, you really really really insist on a 5.1 setup?

Ok, there's this option. I have a pair of SDA 2A that I want to sell. They are big speakers but they are basically a 3.1 setup by themselves. So all you need are rears. There's an RTA-8 pair that's selling for $100. That's $300 total. Can you spare that for speakers for your 5.1?

Obviously, you can try to haggle the RTA-8 down to $75 or $50, but $100 is a fair price... not amazing, but fair. You can come over and listen to my SDA 2A before you buy too. I can set them up whenever.

Those would be better than the Z5500... but I never liked Yamaha's stuff. Onkyo is a tad better.

Btw, you said you had a budget of 250 for receiver. And we only went $50 over on your speakers.

well actually my budget was 300 at max to get something that plays alright.but yea it would be hard to find an alright reciever for 200.

Ok, well, get whatever you want. At $300 for a 5.1, you can't be picky.

Honestly I would go with whatever has the following:

Most HDMI Inputs (if it doesn't decode audio over HDMI also factor in Optical connections in)

Look at the items you will connect and just make sure they will work OK. Up conversion for the most part doesn't work well with any receiver (even my 800 dollar one) so don't factor that in.

Try to get what you think is best. I would personally avoid Pioneer and stick with either Yamaha or Onkyo (I trust them a little more)
