Home Server: Drives seem hot

I just recently put together a file server for my home. It is going to be on all the time. Today, I decided to stop by Microcenter to get a couple of 80mm fans.

When I opened up my case (Generic mid atx) to install the fans, I put my fingers on the hard drives and they were warm to extra warm. Almost hot I guess. I put my fingers on the heatsink of the cpu and I could barely feel anything.

What gives? Do hard drives run rather warm or do I need better cooling?

Now, the hard drives (2 x 500gb WD SATA) are installed in the case half way between the top and the bottom of the case. I installed an 80mm fan at the bottom front of the case tonight, but it doesn't blow directly on the drives themselves.

Do I need to get a better case?
 
Probably not. Before I put any ventilation on my WD's, they ran 50'C regularly. Hot to the touch for the first few minutes after shutting off the computer.

With a bit of airflow, they'll go down to 40.
 
I wouldn't worry about it. They are designed to run warm. Yeah a fan may extend their lives a bit but we are talking 7.5 years instead of 7 on a drive that is obsolete in 3 :)
 
You can google up the official specs and compare it to a hardware monitor. As long as its within specification who cares about subjective "warmth"?
 
I remember reading somewhere that the optimum operation temperature of modern HDs is somewhere around 40-50C. Hard drives do run hot, but they're designed to handle the heat and they aren't in any real danger of failing prematurely.

Remember too Google did that HDD study that said heat really played like no difference in what drives failed and how they failed.
