I would like to RAID since I'll have multiple hard drives in this home server

No, I'd like to use Windows Home Server but unsure if I should go ubuntu.


I've got my gaming build already setup and ready to go but I want to build a home media server for my house. I'd like to store movies,tv shows and backups for my desktop and laptop. This is a brand new venture for me so I'd like to use WHS since that seems the easiest yet I was on newegg and just all the different parts confused me! Between regular desktop and server parts, I'm unsure what to pick!

My only request is that the parts be quiet/silent and consume little power. I also wouldnt mind learning about the benefits of having a home server!
 
I don't have a lot of experience with Windows Home Server (WHS), however the basic description of your file serving needs could be serviced by something like a Synology Disk Station or any number of other turnkey NAS systems. You could also purchase an off the shelf Windows Home Server if you were looking for specific experience with that OS and still be under budget (this Acer or this HP, for example.)

If you are planning on building your own, and need to have the cost of the OS included in the $400 budget, the following should hopefully suffice. Note: due to the $400 budget with two drives and OS I didn't take silence or power into account. If you want low power and quiet at this price, consider a turnkey NAS or off the shelf WHS.

$100 or $120 - Windows Home Server OS.
$101 - AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core and BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 AMD 880G mATX Motherboard
$35 - G.SKILL Value Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
$50 x 2 (use promo code EMCKDJF27) - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM
$60 - COOLER MASTER Elite 310 RC-310-BKR2-GP with 420w PSU -- I'm not a big fan of this, but it should make do. If you want to do it right, you're looking at a nicer PSU and slightly larger budget (maybe $20 to $30 more.) Alternatively, you can axe one of the disk drives.

The above assumes you have a DVD drive to install the OS. Also, I'm not a WHS expert. I assume that the above parts will work with WHS, but can't guarantee it.

Yes it will work, mine run on 250 Regor, more than enough, if you want to use the dirve extender, make sure to pick-up WHS not WHS 2011
 
400 bucks with the OS I would say for sure just to buy an acer or hp prebuilt (as linked above)..

For your needs your really not going to get better. I have had several different rigs running WHS & it does not require much so the atom's in them give you the best efficiency for cost. Unless you have some other non listed task's that you are wanting to do then I would specifically get the Acer (since its 50 bucks less with a bigger drive). Then start dropping in 2tb drives as you have the money.
