Hello people at the [H]


My friend is looking to build a Home Recording Studio in his basement.. and lets say... He has the money for it..


He asked me to search the net and see where to order the parts.. or if we can buy one setup and it has everything..

Does anyone here know of sites that do this? Sell full Recording Studio equipment?

He wont tell me how much he wants to spend.. But lets keep it on the kinda cheap end.. he dont want shitty stuff..

I don't see them on the site, but there are some in the catalog (not including the room padding and such). I believe they also go and set up studios for people. The site sells computer packages, and in the catalog there are non-computer solutions from 3-41 thousand dollars (just a quick look though).
 
Well... you can't just buy a 'full setup'. It doesn't work that way.

You have to know what you want. You may need a vocal booth. You may need to soundproof the whole room. You may need a 16 track recording setup. You may need 4.

It really depends on what he's going for. If he doesn't know at this point, I would advise getting his feet wet by getting some books and reading up on them. Then, start small. Recording is an EXPENSIVE hobby, and if he's not going to use it, don't bother wasting your money. Like computers, this equipment depreciates and becomes obsolete very quickly.

Is he looking to record? Make beats?

For production work, to make beats and what not, I'd recommend a good studio computer. a gig of ram, 40gb hd, 2.X processor should be plenty. He's not going to need multitrack so he doesnt really need a mixing board.

I suggest picking up a copy of Propellerhead's Reason (for music production), and Syntrilliums Cool Edit Pro (for mastering and wave editing). Also, he should look into either an oxygen midiman 8, or an oxygen keystation-66. He can use USB to inferface either of these and play his Reason instruments live, as well as record them that way.

For more on music production, I suggest some decent music magazines from barnes and nobles or borders.


For recording, he's going to need a good mic. Generally, the more you spend the more you get. 'You get what you pay for' is especially true with recording mics. A good vocal condensor mic, boomstand, windscreen, and a decent set of headphones (i recommend some sony studio headphones) should go together nicely. ALWAYS remember to put away the mic when youre not using it. Moisture can easily ruin a condensor mic.

Also invest in a decent XLR cable for the mic. A good mic is nothing wihtout a good wire.

A vocal booth or closet would be a wise investment as well. Fill it with noise dampener (they sell studio foam fairly cheap nowdays).

As for soundcards, turtle beach seems to be a favorite among audiophiles. You might want something with an XLR input. A 3/4 inch jack aint bad (think audigy), but an XLR input would sound a bit better.

Read read read. There is free material on this all over the net.
