Building a new home office that is all about computer gaming and a little steaming video. Would like to upgrade my audio system to something reasonably awesome and lay out the office to deliver a great surround sound computer gaming experience.

Currently I run a 200 watt Logitech Z-2300 2.1 setup and a set of Corsair 1500 headphones. The headphones just destroy the speaker setup and I was floored by the number of sounds I'd been missing over the years. My wife gets supremely pissed off when I wear them though as she likes to chit-chat with me while I'm on the computer... Would like to build a 4.1 or 5.1 setup that delivers at least the same level of quality as the Corsair 1500 headphones.

Screenshot of the room below. $500-1000 is where I'd like to be. Any recommendations on hardware and layout would be greatly appreciated. Could have the closet moved and a desk designed however I'd like.

If I was spending your money I would get an entry level 5.1 Receiver (I am partial to Yamaha and would get the RX-V377 for $250 @ Amazon) and pair that with 2 pairs of Andrew Jones designed bookshelf Pioneer SP-BS22-LR and the center channel SP-C22. The bookshelf speakers are currently $127/pair, but they go on sale a couple times a year for around $80/pair. The center channel is currently $100 and it also goes on sale for around $80. The bookshelf speakers are large, but based on your room dimensions I don't think this will be a problem. The Micca MB42X at $80 each and the associated center channel are an alternative for speakers. Pair either speakers with a Polk PSW10 and you have a great setup for under $750 at current prices.

I have a 7.1 setup in my family room using a Yamaha 673 receiver and the Andrew Jones speakers. I have zero complaints regarding the receiver and speakers.
 
Spent awhile chatting with a Crutchfield rep this morning shortly after posting this. He recommended exactly the same receiver you did. Yamaha RX-V377
He recommended the Energy Micro 5.1 speakers. Saying that for the money they can't be touched.

Since the center channel is still in stock and looks to add one more driver... Would it be better to use 2 centers as the left and right? Not sure if the intended function is so cut and dry.

Bookshelf speakers are back in stock for $60 as of 10:15AM CST. It wouldn't hurt to use 2 center channels.
 
BTW I forgot to ask this: do you plan to use the speakers in nearfield or midfield?

This is a very important factor when planning what speakers you buy.

Nearfield according to how google described it.

I went with the Pioneer Andrew Jones series. Picked up 4 of the book shelf speakers, center channel, sub, and the Yamaha RX-V377 receiver. With cables it came in at $534.14 and free Prime shipping.

I was assuming also nearfield since this is usually the case for PC usage. This is why I recommended nearfield speakers, it's generally better to get speakers designed for the intended listening distance.

No idea how good the ones you picked are in the nearfield though.
